I'm thinking about buying a 500 G external hard drive, Seagate for $119 from Fry's. Anybody heard anything good or bad about Seagate lately (besides being loud)?

it's apples & oranges. I do alot of computer fix's/builds. I personally like western digital but have tried them all. Go to newegg.com, read the reviews for individual HD's. I use a portable enclosure that will take any IDE HD, it's usb.

Anybody heard anything good or bad about Seagate lately (besides > being loud)? I have a SG 300GB external, USB/Firewire. Has been fine for about a year. (replaced a Maxstor that failed at about a year). And it's not loud at all, doesn't whine, have to have your ear right up near it to hear it write. Incidentally, have two SG 200GB HD's in the puter also; they make slightly more noise than the external, but not much. More a deeper sound on read/write than Western Digitals, which I always preferred, but puter builder I've always used went with Sea Gate about a year ago. MM

Their return policy was undoable. It's hard to imagine now, and maybe I was wrong but they insisted on an error code and had no live contact number. I couldn't get an error message on a dead drive.
