Subject: Myrtle Beach Recommendations?
I haven't seen many recent reviews posted here in this ng for any MB
courses. I'm going down there 2nd week of February and hope to play
as much golf as I can get in 4 days time. My friends and I play to
low single digit handicaps and prefer more challenging type golf
courses with faster/truer rolling greens.

Could anyone please recommend some courses based on above criteria?
Green fees are not that important to us. Playability, layout, course
conditioning and course location are also factors we are interested in
when evaluating a golf course. We will be staying close to the
convention center located in the central strand area of MB.

I've played in MB before but that was many years ago and I'm sure much
has changed in this very dynamic area of SC. Course recommendations
from all whom respond will be greatly appreciated.

Our group always plays Beachwood and Azalea Sands each time we go down
to Myrtle Beach. It is a little North of where you will be staying
but the courses are flawless and inexpensive. My favorite part about
these two courses is that the staff working there are friendly,
honest, and down to earth.

I noticed that a lot of the courses in this area has a couple of
greens that are on an island or looks like they are. My group tries
to avoid these courses until we have eliminated the "first round
jitters" of the year at Beachwood and Azalea Sands. These two courses
are perfect to help relax you and you'll find that you will need to
use about every club in your bag while playing there.

Sincerely,
Aeriell

Psst. Beachwood and Azalea Sands are closed. Permits pending for a large
housing development.

I will be there the same week, playing a package that includes rounds
at Barefoot Resort. I've palyed the Love and Dye courses before and
loved them both. I hope to get Fazio and Norman as two of the three,
but as a single, you can't get advance tee times with the hotel
packages (at least at Sands Resorts), and have to get a time reserved
every morning at the hotel desk after chow.

My favorite course down there may be the Avocet course at Wild Wing.
No two holes are even remotely alike. The ownership has changed and
the other 3 courses there have been killed off for real estate. ;_;

I play between a generous 11 (translation: questionable gimmies) and
18 and play mostly from the white or member's tees, and I like courses
with a lot of strategic options (can you say "short off the tee?")
such as Pawley's Plantation, Heather Glen, Tiger's Eye, Heathland and
Moorland (at Legends) and the now defunct Wild Wing Hummingbird are
the courses I tend to keep returning to.

My faves after going down there for about 15 straight
years....Tidewater, Heather Glen, Caledonia, The Witch, any of the 3
Sea Trail courses and Brick Landing (short but still challenging with
alot of water). Have fun!

On the south end to TPC, River Club (bent grass greens and fast) True
Blue and Caladonia. Look for daily fee courses, second round is cart
fee only, and those you're considering are worth playing twice.

Take a look at Golf Digest's Best Places to Play for some good
suggestions.

Mid priced....The Wizard, Man-o-war, and The Witch, all are petty decent
courses located only a few miles from where you are staying.

At Barefoot, the Fazio and the Dye are challenging, especialy the Dye.

No one in my group ever wants to return to Glen Dornoch, too hard for
them.

Rivers Edge, way north.

Grande Dunes can be played to 7600 yards and if you get a crosswind,
it can be brutal

Since no one else has given any response I'll put my 2 Cents in.
Barefoot landing- All are reputed to be nice courses, I've played the Love
course and it is nice, you would enjoy
Tigers Eye, Lions Paw, Panthers Run- Played these and was pleasantly
surprised with how nice they were, especially enjoyed Tiger
Caledonia- My favorite course ever, enough said. (but it's a pretty long
drive from Central MB to Murrells Inlet)
Surf Club-On my top 5 list, but it's private and you may not have any luck
getting on.
Tidewater- haven't played it but would like to, reputed to be a very tough
course
I've played quite a few others but these are the ones that I would consider.
