After 3 rounds of the Samsung World Championship, Michelle Wie
ranks third from the bottom in driving distance (234.80 yards).
That's 23 yards less than Annika. She also ranks last in
fairways hit with only 27 in three rounds.

Meet me on a good day and I'll probably beat her. ;P Now I can criticise
her, no?

Driving distance is essentially meaningless. You have no idea what clubs
she was hitting or what her intent was.

That, on the other hand, is not good.

Last in fairways hit is your answer. She is in that desert so much
piling up those 'unplayables', that she probably is hitting 3W's or
3I's when they have their two holes designated for 'Driving Distance'
holes.

She also is in 18th place out of 20th, as I type now almost 20 shots
behind Annika.

DD doesn't mean anything with a such a small sample. For all you know,
she's hitting a 3 iron on those holes that they are using to measure DD
(they don't measure EVERY drive, only 2 per round).

I would agree with you that it is meaningless if it was just her DD stat
that was poor but since it was both DD and fairways, that says something.
Either she was hitting 3 iron because the driver or even 3 wood was going
sideways or she was hitting some sort of wood, just not well, but either
case, they were not landing in the fairways. I have not bothered to look at
this years stats but for MW's 2005 stats, both LPGA and Open events, I could
never find a measured drive that was 270 or more. For the 2005 US Open, she
was middle of the pack, somewhere around 250 average and something like 5th
in distance for the Ams. If she is super long for a female, that stats do
not seem to back it up.

Sounds like she isnot hitting very well off the tee, regardless of what
she is hitting.
