So who has the talent to hit a low shot from rough in the woods? Grass up to your ankles, no real opening, you have to thread it between some closely spaced tree trunks and you have to cut it properly to get to the green. Youy have to keep it low to stay under the trees at the start and the greens are crusty and hard as asphalt. Who has the talent to make a shot of about 170 like that with a mid iron? Not Tex; he has said as much. According to Tex, only Tiger Woods can make a shot like that. Not R&B. According to R&B only Tiger Woods can make a shot like that. Not Mike Dalecki. According to Mike Dalecki, only Tiger Woods can make a shot like that. Not glfnaz. According to glfnaz, only Tiger Woods can make a shot like that. BUT!!! I saw it with my own eyes! David Laville can make a shot like that!

Indeed we have, and it's been a pleasure each time to see someone who can actually swing the golf club who knows what he's doing. I've never seen a putting exhibition quite like the one David put on during the practice round at RSG-MEMPHIS '99. I'm sure Ken Pitts, who played with us that day, would agree. Sadly for David, I believe he used up all his good putting for....oh....the next five years or so. David and I have played golf together a few other times together here in Atlanta, both at informal rounds that surrounded the official rounds at RSG-ATLANTA events, and once at a little event that Eric Strulowitz put together here in Atlanta. I don't recall with 100% certainty, but I believe we were in the same group with Rob Hamilton at the RTJ Trail outside Montgomery when Gaines Nichols hosted a rain-shortened RSG event. Each time I've seen David play, his ball-striking was superb. However, ever since that lights-out putting round in Memphis, I have not seen him score quite as well. Putting has a way of having that effect. The boy can play. Randy

No. Definitely left rough, and definitely not 18. Possibly the 14th, but not 18. No water, it was slightly uphill, as well. The South 18th is slightly downhill if anything.

Possibly the 14th, : but not 18. No water, it was slightly uphill, as well. The South : 18th is slightly downhill if anything. OK, I'm thinking of a different shot, then, because Tiger has definitely hit a fairly astounding shot out of the trees on the right over the water and onto the 18th green to nail down a victory there. -- Chris Bellomy C-List Charter Member http://clist.org/

I, of course, am not so fully aware of every word that Tiger Woods has uttered that I could make any absolute statements with respect to what he may or may not have said, so you may be right about Tiger....but then again, you may be wrong...as far as I know. Of course claiming one can hit a given shot repeatedly and claiming one can hit a shot on demand are two different things; but that's not an issue with you is it? How about something more outlandish! I can hit shots with a driver that will carry 220+ quite repeatedly, but I can't do it on demand! Figure that one out! Worse yet, if I managed to hit a chip from deep, thick tour style rough from the short side to a tight pin on a quick green to a foot from the hole, I doubt I could repeat it in my lifetime...but I beleive I could repeatedly hit a low spinner 185 from a grassy lie in the woods, although perhaps not as easily as I could in 2003. Age happens, you know!

I beleive that I could hit a 185 yard low spinner out of a grassy lie in the woods. No spin there. No claim that I could make the shot on demand either. Of course I don't need to make some political issue out of what other people post here and then try to belittle them. You are of course free to comment as you will, but again, IMHO, your opinions are simply trollish and little more than comic relief. The need you have to belittle other people is exceptionally pathetic, but in a humorous sort of way. You, Greer, Dalecki and a few others have been this way since you came here, and people like Llarry deliberately bait you, and you take the bait, which is hilarious. You jump on people like me for making honest comment. So be it, but don't expect me to take it too seriously; it's just comic relief to me. I am in no way responsible to you for my comment. This is the last time you will get anything reasonable back from me on such issues, FWIW. If you want to talk honestly about golf, I'll take you seriously. You and these others have more or less ruined this newsgroup because people are afraid to make legitimate comment, but if that's the way it is, so be it. No skin off any part of my body.

I suppose different grasses have different ranges of soil pH tolerances. I have measured pH's in woods, and they are usually in the 4 range. I use one of those things that looks like a spike and you shove it into the ground when it is moist and it gives you a reading. Cost us about 100 bucks from Forestry Suppliers. Optimal pH's for grasses I know of are alkaline in that they are above 7.0. 15-20 yards into the woods at a course called Torrey *PINES*, I would expect a pretty acidic soil. The soil in my lawn under a couple of oak trees is pretty acidic, and the St. Augustine grass greens up real nice when I throw in some lime; although it is pretty whispy grass, and gets whispier the closer you get to the trees, even though they get a lot of light (the lowest branch on the trees is about 20 feet up...and there are just two trees, with the rest being totally open). The course where David made his shot is Bermuda, probably some tifdwarf type given the course is fairly recent, the trees are pretty dense there (Oaks). The grass is pretty etiolated, and the leaves are about 6" or so long, but there is hardly what anyone would think of as any sort of density of tillers in there, as you would expect in the woods. In any event, the trees there are a lot less dense than what the woods at Torrey Pines looked.

IIRC, he was in the left rough, had to go under some branches and over some trees or bushes to a tight pin over a bunker. Also, I believe it was a 4i, and was a low, rising draw...seems like I recall him flipping his wrists extremely aggressively through impact. The opening was minute, and there's pretty much one person on earth who could hit that shot...much less when it counts. And it ain't The Professor.

As R&B pointed out to me..... seeing someone play one time does not give a good indication of playing ability. You and I played one time in Calhoun. If I recall correctly, I shot about 84 or 85 when you and I played. You had (I think I'm right about this) an 81 or 82. Does that mean I'm assistant pro material? No, it means we both played like crap that day. As a matter of fact, Annika shot 40 on the front 9 and I had a triple bogey on 9 for a 39. I beat him and you on the front 9. That doesn't mean I'm better. It means for that 9 holes I played better at that time. The back 9 was another story. Annika shot par and I was "Rand McNally". I'm sure you play much better than that, just as I do and just as Laville does. However, I don't claim to be some hot-shot Golfing Machine Instructor that thinks he knows tons about the swing (as Laville thinks he does). If I were going to give swing advice, I would make sure I had the game to back it up to put some validity in what was being taught. I know that Tiger swings way to hard with the driver and pushes the ball because of it. Who am I to tell him what he he is doing wrong until I can beat the SOB. I don't claim to be better than Laville, but for a "golf instructor" he plays like shit. I would love to have a "grudge" match against Laville. I don't that would happen because I'd probably beat the dumbass punk with a sand wedge up side his head before we made the turn. Okay, I don't mean to be the public defender for David Laville. He's perfectly capable of speaking on his own behalf. But I do feel compelled to step in here and say something about this... Though it may be hard to believe when you see me play, I actually know a little something about the golf swing. Having spent a lot of time with some extremely qualified teaching pros, not to mention some of the world's finest players and best-known instructors and talked "golf swing" with them, I've formulated quite a few ideas about the golf swing along the way. Do I play like I know what I'm talking about? Well, sometimes yes, sometimes no. More often than not in the last couple of years, the answer is no. Why? Because I never practice. I've been to the driving range JUST TO PRACTICE (not to warm up and then go play) exactly ONCE in the last four or five years. So I don't have muscle memory. I have muscle amnesia. :-) Does that mean I shouldn't share what knowledge I have about the golf swing? I don't think so. When it comes to instructional information shared in a Usenet forum, I think the watchword is always "Buyer Beware." > If I were going to give swing advice, I would make sure I had the game to > back it up to put some validity in what was being taught. Why? That's like telling a football fan he shouldn't be second-guessing the play-calling in a game he sees on TV. Does that mean he shouldn't be telling others how to play golf? But he coached Hubert Green to a major championship title. Hank Haney will be the first to tell you he's not a very good player. But evidently, he knows enough about the golf swing that Tiger Woods trusts him. Sorry, Ringer, but your argument doesn't hold much water. All it really reveals is a dislike for David, which is certainly your perogative. But let's call it what it really is. Randy

When have I ever shot 106??? I've been playing golf since 1977 and I have never shot over 100 in any round I've played. Last year I played about 5 rounds. The last round I played if I made a 10 on the last hole I would have broke 100 for the first time. As luck would have it I hit a nice 6 iron into the 18th, 2 putted for par and ended up with a 94. That was the worst round I ever remember playing. It was also cold, rainy and windy on a monster golf course. So........ take the 106 somewhere else. In fairness to David, I've seen him play a helluva lot better than he did at RSG-ATLANTA. I know quite well that he's a fine player, and an excellent ball-striker when he's had the chance to practice and keep his game sharp. Everybody has bad days (even bad weeks or months), and theres no debate that David didn't bring his "A" game to Atlanta the weekend you saw him play here. Heck, I've even seen David putt and make everything he looked at -- something he'd be the first to tell you was a complete anomoly. But I saw it happen with my own eyes one day in Memphis, on a course he'd never laid eyes on before. I've also seen him struggle to make a single 4-footer in an entire round. I'm inclined to believe that the "real" Laville putting stroke lies somewhere in between the two extremes. One thing I'm sure of is that living in New Orleans, where the greens (before Katrina) were slow, bumpy bermuda, couldn't have done much to prepare him for the slick, quick, undulating bentgrass greens in Memphis and Atlanta. Likewise, I'm sure anyone whose stroke was tuned to the greens around these parts would struggle mightily on the shag carpet-like surfaces David has putted on for years in New Orleans. (And lord knows what they're like now in the post-Katrina era.) But to sarcastically describe David as "Mister 96" is patently unfair, and it misrepresents his true abilities. John, David's a good guy, too. I know things went awry between you guys at Atlanta but maybe it's time write that off as one of those things that happen and let it go. I know you're a fine player and that you were well received in Atlanta as well, so I hope you will take this with all intended respect. But look around -- David is well liked and well respected by a wide cross-section of people here. He does have a strong personality, though, as do you, and sometimes the combination can be combustible. Shit happens. Actually my short game and putting usually sucks. When you and I played in Calhoun, my driving was pretty decent, but I had trouble with the irons pushing to the right and ending up about a club short. David Laville can make a shot like > that! Rob, let's get your facts straight. I've never said a low shot out of ankle-deep rough couldn't be achieved by anyone but Tiger Woods. I've never, ever said that. Neither has Tex, Mike, or glfnaz. In point of fact, when hitting out of ankle-deep rough, I'd say it's generally easier to get a ball to come out low than it is to hit a high shot over a tree out of rough that deep. (And that's not taking anything away from David Laville's shot; I'm sure he hit a fine one, as he's perfectly capable of doing so.) But let's refresh the memories of those in this room who weren't around when this little brouhaha started a couple of years ago. It followed a tournament at which Tiger hit such a shot, and you proceeded to boast in this newsgroup that the same shot he hit with (I think it was) a 6-iron, you could do just as well. If memory serves, it was about a 190-yard shot over water. And you claimed that you could do it, easily, on command, any time you needed to. I said you couldn't. Not from 190 with a 6-iron. Not on command, as you claimed. Not under the pressure of having a tournament on the line as you claimed. Not on your life. I stand by what I said. Not by what your revisionist memory now erroneously claims that I said. In fact, I would go so far as to say that you couldn't drop 100 balls and hit a single one out of ankle deep TOUR-thick rough with a 6-iron, avoiding tree limbs that overhanging 30 yards in front of you, get the ball to stay in the air and carry a greenside water hazard, and still get the ball to check up and stay on a green stimping at TOUR speeds from 190 yards away with something significant riding on the outcome as Tiger did that day. That's what you said you could do. Easily. On command. There's not a chance in hell you could do it, hitting the ball high, low or through your ass. Not then. Not now. Not ever. Randy

I said I could make it. The only real claim I made with respect to myself was that I could make that 186 yard shot with a 7W Woods made more often than Tex could break 80 at Dancing Rabbit. My real claim was that any good player could make that kind of shot. Grass doesn't grow well in the woods for 2 reasons; not enough light and grass doesn't like acidic soil. All people like you really show me with your statements on the issue is how little real direcvt experience you have with what kinds of shots people can and cannot make.

Rob, you and I both know this is merely a diversionary tactic. First of all, we both know that grass doesn't grow in the woods. We're not talking about a forest here. We're talking about a series of trees that stand alongside the fairway at Torrey Pines Golf Course. And perhaps you've heard, there are greenkeepers at golf courses that actually care for the grounds, quite unlike a forest where the only inhabitants are bears and other creepy crawlies. There was grass under the tree that Tiger hit from. Anyone who remembers the shot (and the subsequent discussion about it) remembers quite well that there was rough up to his ankles and the ball was sitting down in it. So that kinda flies in the face of your attempt at misdirecting people's recollection of it by pointing out that grass doesn't grow in the woods. It is so like you to make a bold claim, and then, perhaps knowing full well you can't live up to it, say later that you never made the claim in the first place. Big talk. Little ability to back it up. Now tell me something I didn't already know. Randy

Any decent player can hit a low spinner 185 or so out of a grassy lie in the woods. Woods was actually lucky the ball was on a grassy lie, it's one of the best lies you can get in the woods. "Golfers" who have to cheat to play will roll the ball onto the grass areas if they are in the woods; I've seen it many, many times. Your rhetoric shows your basic inexperience with the general level of ability of the better recreational players and how grass grows in the woods. Not to be unexpeceted from you. You are not a lifelong golfer, and you really don't golf all that much anyways. There are no issues other than these in my mind. I absolutely know any good player can make such shots because I've seen it many times. I know how grass grows in the woods and why. I also know I can hit a low spinner on demand, and have never claimed anything more than that other than speculations on what club I might use for a given distance. A low spinner is an easy shot to hit even for me. Of course my point att the time was fool commentators exaggerating the event, which is done in golf more than any other sport because there are so many commentators in golf who know little to nothing about golf. I witness this years Masters commercials; replays if idiot commentary. The event makes itself; commentators only diminish the event with excessive babble, especially when they don't know what they are talking about. Good commentators are elegant; fewer words but more effective commentary. No better example than the shambles they are making of the event today. I was actually trying to watch it, but have obviously quit; they just won't shut up and show the tournament! They just keep babbling on and on and on behind minimal coverage of the actual event.

"Robert Hamilton" <DBID@att.net > wrote > > Of course my point att the time was fool commentators > exaggerating the event, which is done in golf more than > any other sport because there are so many commentators > in golf who know little to nothing about golf. Your comments at that time were about the television commentators covering the Buick Invitational at Torrey Pines, which would specifically refer to the commentators on CBS-TV, which covered that event at the time. Let's compare how their "little to nothing" knowledge about golf compares to your own. At the time of the event in question where the comments made about Tiger's shot under the trees at Torrey Pines brought a shitstorm of criticism from you, the CBS golf commentators were: Lanny Wadkins -- A stellar career on the PGA TOUR, spanning over 20 years. 21-time winner on the PGA TOUR, ranking him T21st on the TOUR's all time victories list. Winner of the PGA Championship and The PLAYERS Championship, not to mention a couple of "Tournament of Champions" events. Bobby Clampett - A one-time winner on the PGA TOUR with 33 career Top-10 finishes over a 20-year PGA TOUR career. A fine amateur career, which included winning the 1978 and 1980 California State Amateur Championship. Low amateur at the 1978 US Open. Three-time All-American at Brigham Young. Two-time winner of the Fred Haskins Award, presented to the top collegiate player. Became the youngest player in history to exceed $500,000 in career earnings on the PGA TOUR. Peter Kostis - World-renowned golf instructor who has been a member of the Golf Digest teaching staff for over 20 years. Instructor for many TOUR professionals, a few of which are Bernhard Langer, k Calcavecchia and Steve Elkington, collectively responsible for a total of five major championship titles, not to mention around 80 more titles on the PGA TOUR and European Tour. Under the tutelage of Kostis, one of his students, Calcavecchia, set the all-time PGA TOUR scoring record for 72 holes, breaking a k that had stood for 46 years. Gary McCord - Two-time All-American at the University of California-Riverside. A member of the 1970 College Division II Championship team before turning pro in 1971. Twice a runner-up on the PGA TOUR, with just under two dozen Top-10 finishes on the PGA TOUR. A multiple winner on the Champions TOUR. David Feherty - A five-time winner on the European Tour, twice finishing in the Top 10 on the European Tour's Order of Merit. A winner of over $3-million on both the European Tour and PGA TOUR. Best finish on the PGA TOUR was 2nd at the '94 New England Classic. Represented Ireland numerous times in international competition, and captained the victorious 1970 Alfred Dunhill Cup team. A member of the European Team at the 1991 Ryder Cup matches. T6 at the 1989 British Open. Jim Nantz - Even Nantz -- a broadcaster, not a golfer -- played on the University of Houston golf team with future professionals Fred Couples and Blaine McCallister while majoring in broadcasting. Those are the credentials of the CBS golf announce team. Now, let's examine your credentials: Rob Hamilton - Owns golf clubs, and has even been known to build them. Is an avid recreational golfer. Has never shot an 18-hole round of par or better in his life, and would be lucky to break 100 on a TOUR course under tournament conditions. Has, in fact, never even set foot on a TOUR course under tournament conditions. A frequent poster to RSG. Considers Tiger Woods "overrated." Believes that certain shots Tiger has hit in professional competition, which evoked words of praise from seasoned TOUR professionals-turned-commentators, to be shots he "could do repeatedly." The most prestigious golf tournaments he has entered had the letters RSG in their name. Yes, Rob, there's no denying it. Your vast experience and knowledge about the highest levels of competitive golf, borne out of all your years struggling to break 80 (or 90) at the local municipal courses in and around Jackson, Mississippi qualifies you as an authority to pass judgement on how the announcers on CBS-TV's golf coverage know "little to nothing" about golf. As it should be plainly evident to anyone who reads this and has a lick of sense, we should all believe what you have to say about competitive golf at the highest level before placing an ounce of credibility on what the CBS announce crew has to say on the subject. Sorry, Rob, but you've just been outed as the quack you are. Not that anyone didn't already know it. Randy

Do I admit them.? Well, recently I made erroneous claims about the nature of a throwing motion, was called on it, looked at the data and told the person "you got me!". On another recent occasion, I made comments about the interesting turf at soldier field when the "bears" played The Saints in the recent NFL Championship game and wondered who changed the turf before important games, claiming it was ludicrous. Turns out it is routine to put in nrew turf before big games like that...I admitted my error. Of course in that case it even begged the major point more! So when do you admit when you are wrong? As to golf commentators, what do I care who they are? If they aren't entertaining or I personally don't find them credible on some issue, I am in fact free to not watch them and to question their interpretations based on my own personal life experience. I guess in your world we are all supposed to accept verbatim the views of others based on some third parties (like you) interpretation of their qualifications. If that's OK by you then you have no business criticizing the likes of George W. Bush for example. What do you know about politics and being President of the United States compared to him? Who the heck is a no nothing like you to criticize any PODUS?

I believe that I may have posted 3 or 4 times here and yet you are knowledgeable enough to judge me, my club and the members. I know all about you. You have posted thousands of times. I know your real name, where you live, who you worked for, the club you belong to, what you look like, your political beliefs, economic class, previous occupation and that you are over 70 and retired and barely break 90 these days. Even that you have been ried a few times. And yet you are able to judge me without even a speck of information. Quite amazing! You might consider that I have no ax to grind here and that my comments are those of an objective observer and perhaps have some merit. This is how you, and your friends, are viewed by a casual reader of what you all post. Multiply that by whatever number have read these posts and you have an idea how a sizeable group of strangers may think of you. Perhaps there is something for you to consider here and learn from. Doubtful that you will though based upon the mass of previous evidence that you have left behind :-) I find it incredulous that a grown man would leave such a trail on Usenet. Does not seem prudent to me. If I can learn so much about you in a matter of seconds imagine how that information could be used by someone with a sinister intent. Well I have had my say. Take it however you please. I will not impose on you any more. BTW I still believe that you are a group of old gossiping hens ;-)

He had to hit a low cut, under trees and then uphil to the green. The pin was front right, and he put it within 10 feet and made the putt. Since TW can hit a 7 or 8 iron 180, I would think that it was a little tougher shot than just a low cut. It was a very difficult shot, the announcers...specifically Feherety...were excited and Rob took umbrage at that. Rob stated that he could hit that shot on command, which was simply foolish of him. I doubt if he could ever pull it off. -- ___, \o

I think the announcer said it was a 4 iron. Whether or not I recall all the details of Tiger's specific shot (I'll let others with more time to kill go Google the original thread to referesh my memory about the specific yardage and club involved), one thing I'm sure of: If it's a shot the announcers said was difficult (and most of them are closer to knowing than any viewer could possibly be, since, after all, most of them have either played on TOUR or coached players who do), I'm quite certain that Rob couldn't hit it on command the way he bragged that he could. The way Rob made it sound, any 18-handicapper could pull off the shot Tiger did. Somehow, I have a hard time buying that. Call me crazy. Rob has never even seen TOUR rough, let alone tried to hit out of it. Randy
