Subject: Lead tape on driver heads?
|
I've noticed on close-ups that some of the pros will have lead tape on their irons. But what effect does lead tape have on titanium heads. Distance? Swing correction? Club makers are now including screw weights on their drivers, some even adding the weights inside the heads. Does adding your own lead tape to a titanium head improve the ball flight? Reduce the distance? Or is lead tape, like copper bracelets, only a keting ploy?

It's for increasing the weight of the club, pure and simple. I have a couple of strips on my driver, and quite a bit on my irons. My irons are D3, which is somewhat heavy. I hear tale that Els plays his irons at D6...which is noticably heavy.

A earlier or primitive form of built-in weight adjustment such as Taylor Made is pushing these days. It's done to increase swingweight of the club. Each 2oz of tape increases the swingweight approximately 1 point. While some people say they use it to create draw or fade bias by adding the tape to the outside or inside end of the head, the actual effect on the center of gravity is negligible for the small amount of weight that is shifted. In order to significantly move the cg, the amount of tape required would make the swingweight way too high for most of us. Never underestimate the placebo effect, though, in a game as mental as golf. A little lead tape can create a measurable change in swingweight, so it does have an effect. You can affect ball flight, biasing your driver to draw, for example, by adding lead tape to the heel. I have lead tape on most of my clubs, most of the time to adjust the swingweight. With a swingweight scale it's easy to get that right, but I have no way to measure the center of gravity, so positioning the tape, for me, is an inexact science. There may be some placebo effect involved for me, but I'll take any help I can get. - cja
