In an attempt to force myself to get out to play more often (I only
played FOUR rounds of golf last year), I joined the men's club at a
local public daily fee course. I also wanted to establish a handicap
and maybe compete in some tournaments.

The last time I held a handicap was in 1987 and it was a 10.3 That
was when I was playing weekly. I would guess I probably play to a 14
or 15 now.

So I played in my first tournament Saturday before last. Standing on
the first tee with a foursome of people I've only just met, the
following foursome waiting in the wings... The pro offering the daily
course tips and a plea for speeded up play... I tee it up, take a
mighty swing, and dead top it. The ball rolls off the tee box and into
the desert scrub. It didn't get any better. I posted a BIG FAT 100
for my first score. yeeesh.

Looking forward to more fun!

Tom

If it's at a golf course it can't really be a men's club.

It's more like a club for the guys with the smallest vaginas.

Tom,

I expect you'll soon find that you can handle the pressure very well.
I remember my first RSG event -- RSG Ohio 1999 IIRC -- and I was
nervous as hell. Now I've played in so many tournaments, RSG and
otherwise, and beer matches especially!!!, that the first tee doesn't
really bother me.

I notice it a lot during my champ championship on the first few holes
when the guys are nervous about teeing off in front of other people. A
lot of times I take advantage of that and up a couple of holes very
quickly.

Since I'm not a gambler, I think I need tournaments to test my ability
to handle pressure. Pressure is different. I've had more 100
scores than I'd care to consider.

I did tee off one time like you did, took a drop from the scrub to the
grass, hit to a fairway sand trap, and then out and into the hole for
a par...

That's all that really matters.

You guys really should have considered calling it an unplayable lie and
re-teeing ... maybe you did think about it ...

In my case, the drop put me next to the next set of tees 10 yards
closer. Teeing up again may have been worth those 10 yards - or
maybe not. At any rate, dropping the ball there or re-teeing cost
the same 1 stroke, and I was already up there, so dropping was
quicker.
