I am a big Johnny Miller fan...too bad he didn't show (either) at the
Ryder Cup last weekend. From his pre-competition prediction of a USA
win (which I am sure was not his real opinion, but one he and NBC
thought would be the wise one to make public) to his lack of anything
resembling insights into good and bad play, he was clearly not himself
this past weekend.

Maybe it was all the criticism he has taken in the past from Dico
and company, but something kept him quiet all week. It is too bad, too
--- I watched my video tape of the Brookline comeback a few nights ago
and several players including Furyk and Justin Leonard pointed to
critical comments made my Miller as reasons they made the comeback.

And Dico and Furyk could have used someone to kick them in the #%$@
this weekend...

You know, I missed all of Miller's matches. Which days did he play? And
he did worse
than Mickelson?

You have to keep things in perspective, and when they started talking
about how Tom Lehman couldn't have played on the team AND been team
captain, well you have to remember you are listening to guys who either
(a) play golf for a living or (b) announce golf for a living. Not
exactly blue-collar, back breaking work. Once the course is tweaked,
the outfits are selected, and the travel itinerary is set for the week,
setting the final pairings is all that is left. That may be a lot of
work for a retiree, but for those of us still in the working world it
hardly sounds like a big job.

Most of the time when I hear a captain interviewed, he says that one of his
priy duties is to select the uniforms and invariably, he describes that
as a huge responsibility. Hell, if some halfwit moron randomly chose the
clothes would anybody care? Especially if we won:
"Guys, we trounced the Euros this year! (but we did so in mismatched
outfits and we'll never live it down!)

Well somebody has to pick out the team outfits.

That's a tremendous responsibility. Just ask anyone who's been team
captain.

I'd do it. They'd love the color blind outfits I'd put together.
They would make Jesper cringe.

Many of the the top profesisonal athletes in the US are considered
uncoachable... would it be fair to say the same about the US cup teams
of late?

What coaching? The biggest challenge the Ryder Cup captain has is picking
out the outfits.

Could be. I have had the distinct impression that as important as the
captain's job is made out to be, it might be virtually meaningless.
