In today's Skin's game one of the announcers mentioned that JD finished at #193 in 2006 and would have no exemption status for 2007. He then mentioned that JD would have to play on sponsor's exemptions next year. Isn't there a relatively strict limit on the number of sponsor's exemptions that a single player can have in a year? I was thinking that it was 8 or something like that. If that is the case then JD's only real hope would seem to be Q school (although JD in a 6 round tourney playing like he is playing now - doesn't sound promising). Does someone like JD have some other option? Maybe he and Michelle W. could do an exnibition tour (add David Duval for an updated version of 'Big Three Golf'). dave

John Daley is member of the PGA > Tour. You are correct. PGA TOUR members may receive an unlimited number of sponsor invitations. Non-TOUR members may receive a maximum of 7 per year. However, sponsors only get 8 exemptions to hand out for each event, and those exemptions may be given to as many as 2 amateurs. Usually, sponsors use them on players they think will help the box office sales, and clearly Daly is one such player. Sponsors who have ties to foreign countries frequently use them to invite players from the Tours in that country. Like Sony often invites a few Asian Tour players we rarely hear of the rest of the year. Daly has a few other options. Past Champions can get into a limited number of events each year, depending on whether there are enough spots left in the field and they have to go down that far on the pecking order to let Past Champions in. It works like this: the field is filled out based on what's called the Priority Ranking System, which, in essence, lists 34 different qualifying criteria in a pecking order, starting at the top and working to the bottom. Once the field is filled out, if they don't get low enough on the pecking order to get to the qualification Daly would need to use, he's out of luck. Past Champions are mentioned in the 30th and 31st criteria in the pecking order, so he won't get into that many events with this exemptions. Generally speaking, Past Champions can only count on getting into a couple of events a year, and they're quite frequently the lower-tier "Fruit of the Loom Boxer Shorts Open"-type events (frequently the ones scheduled the same week as a major). Daly could use a one-time exemption to gain playing privileges for a year based on his career earnings, if only he were in the Top 50 on on the Career Money Leaders list. But he's 77th, so that's out. Q School is an option, and it wouldn't surprise me to see him try it. Another option would be to go play the Nationwide Tour. It's very conceivable he could finish '07 high enough on the money list there to regain playing privileges on the PGA TOUR in '08. Maybe. The best option for John would be to use one of his sponsor exemptions and shock the world by winning a PGA TOUR event. That would make him fully exempt for the remainder of the year he won, plus two more. Randy

If JD can actually play some decent golf in 2007, he could probably have a successful "permanent free agent" type career in golf.
