Subject: Jesus Wins The Masters!
(AUGUSTA, GA)
April 8, 2007

In a miraculous display of golf on this Easter Sunday, Jesus played a
glorious round to hold off a hard-charging Buddha. The favored Buddha
fought a balky putter on the back-9 as Jesus once again reigned
Supreme. Defending Champion, Satan, had a rough start and was never a
serious threat.

On route to his Glorious victory, Jesus even entertained the patrons
as he skipped across the pond fronting the 16th green. This led some
old-time patrons to remark, "Who does he think he is .... Bobby
Jones?" When interviewed later in the Butler Cabin, Jesus explained
his fine play on this Easter Sunday. "I was really rolling the stone
today," he said. "This one was for Dad. Now I can't wait for next
year's "Champion's Supper."

I sincerely hope you're right. We all know too well about the TV
hawkers and people you would least expect to clearly be hypocrites.

Someone once said something about the "rocks and stones

Well put Bret! I want to know if Johnson thanks Jesus for His
presence during those times when he loses?

His demeanor makes me believe the answer to that is YES.

More power to him.

Not all who spout "Jesus" are shallow about their faith [despite the bad
name it gets from TV hawkers and those mostly in the charismatic community
who are the loudest and most ignorant of what they are dealing with]. AND
it is quite appropriate TO thank the Son of God for anything. He doesn't
get much good press.

Dude, the closest I get to a church is Church's Fried Chicken.

I get my religion almost every day when I'm out taking pics. I'll go
on top of the mountain just to listen to the stillness and the
silence. I watch in wonderment as the eagles fly high up in the
clouds. I'll walk in the woods and listen to the birds and the
squirrels and the sound of a distant train.
I love a good thunderstorm.

I worship Nature and give thanks every day to whoever created it.
I don't worship dead people.

My confusion. I thought I remembered you posting a photo a while back with
the comment that it had been taken from in front of your church. Musta been
someone else.

Tangent - is Church's still around? Haven't seen one of their stores in
California in ages.

Because otherwise you must admit that either:

A. Jesus isn't with you all the time.
or
B. Jesus was with you, but let you lose.

If you answer "A" then your faith is lacking.
If you answer "B" then you are saying that Jesus really doesn't care
who wins or that maybe Jesus wanted someone else to win. And if that
is true then why even bring Jesus into it? Zach sounds like a kid
saying, "Mom likes me the best!"

So either Jesus doesn't care who wins a golf tournament or Jesus will
decide the winner anyway so there really isn't much we can do about
it.
Personally, I think that Zach's grandfather, Bobby Jones, and
Cleopatra had as much influence on the outcome as Jesus did. Nada.
They're all dead!

Your argument doesn't hold water. Faith, so it is said, allows a person to
get through a difficult patch w/o giving up. If Zach's faith was placed in
Jesus then so be it. But, in the end, he was but a source of inner strength.
Anyone who understood that Jesus did anything as a direct cause, for or
against anyone in the tournament, misunderstood what Johnson was trying to
convey.

Probably more of the former than the latter.

A "gimme" can best be defined as an agreement between
two golfers neither of whom can putt very well.

Other alternatives to "A" - Jesus may be with us all the time but there are
times when we may simply feel that presence more or less than at other
times. Bret, you've mentioned in the past that you're a church-going man,
I'm sure you can relate to that.

Alternative to "B" - If we're playing an event, Jesus' influence on us will
often be something other than allowing us to win - as enjoyable as that
might be, there are things to be learned in victory, but probably even more
to be learned in defeat. Or the lesson may have nothing to do with whether
we win or lose that day.

I always got the impression last Sunday that Zach was not thanking Jesus for
letting him win the Masters, but for allowing to feel His presence and
giving him a feeling of "peaceful calm". For Zach, this was one of those
"feeling Him more than usual" days.

> So either Jesus doesn't care who wins a golf tournament or Jesus will

The golf, and the winning or losing in general, are more likely just
incidental tools to whatever it is that Jesus may have been teaching Zach
last Sunday.

If you attribute your faith to your victories then you must also use

Just suppose...just suppose. Fact is Greg Norman or TW didn't say
that, nor likely believes that. When/if it happens, then sports fans
will deal with it.

Unless I'm mistaken, Zach never claimed that Jesus chose him to win.
He just attributed his faith as a factor to his victory.

What one says means nothing. What's in one's heart is all that matters.

> I have been confused about deity and the hereafter my entire life. My

This explains more than you will ever know.

Without some form of spiritual/moral compass (notice I purposefully avoided
calling it a religious affiliation of some kind), it's hard to imagine how
any discussion with you about anything pertaining to morality has can ever
go anywhere other than in circles. Certainly, coming from your side, it
can't have a basis in anything other than fantasy. And as you say, your
point of reference about such matters changes from day to day, so pinning
you down is like trying to hit a moving target. Which explains why you've
been so slippery about this over the years. Only last night, for the first
time in over ten years, did you actually fess up to having a bone up your
butt about Tiger since before he turned pro.

So what's prompting this sudden and unexpected display of uncharacteristic
candor and honestly, Ken? Were you recently diagnosed with terminal cancer
or something and now you're trying to square things with the universe? (I
hope it's nothing that serious, but I do wonder what brought on this
frankness, seemingly out of the clear blue.)

Just serves to remind me that my life was better in many ways when I had you
killfiled.

I may have to consider that move again.

The only thing obvious to you about me is what I tell you.

Whatever subtleties lie beneath those comments are completely transparent to
you. Yet in your infinite wisdom, you draw conclusions based on these
nuggets of information.

Very telling.

And very presumptuous.

Do you teach your children to behave in the same manner, formulating their
opinions based on tiny shreds of evidence without making any effort to dig

For once, I agree with you.

I would prefer something like "I thank God for giving me the strength

religious tirades please.

You claim to be a Christian, yet you show me no compassion at all.
Only disdain and the back of your hand. Just because we disagree, I

You're a nobody. I'm a nobody. We're all a bunch of nobodies whose
opinions won't make an ounce of difference concerning the issue that you
have continued to insist on discussing for over ten years. Tiger doesn't
care what anyone thinks. And why should he? That was my point.

And as for my own faith, let's just say I'm not a religious fanatic or a
"fundamentalist" by any stretch. I'm imperfect, and I never claim to be
anything but. I call things as I see them.

What annoys me so about your perennial tirades about Tiger is that you
haven't made a new point in over eight years about it. You just keep
beating the same drum. It's tired.

We get it already. Your complaint has been duly registered. No one here
can do anything about it, and most don't consider it an issue worthy of the
kind of concern you show over it.

What part of that is so hard to understand? You might as well be talking to
a forest of trees.

Come to think of it, I recommend you do just that. You're just as likely to
find the kind of support you're seeking for your crusade there as you ever
will here.

We just don't care, and most of us find you to be the textbook example of a
hypocrite when you demand behavior of another person -- celebrity or
otherwise -- that you, yourself, aren't willing to live by.

He said that jesus was walking with him as well as his dead
grandfather.
This leads to a few questions:

1. Does Jesus ALWAYS walk with him?
2 Should Johnson's grandfather be worshipped?
3. Does Jesus walk with all the golfers? If not, how does he choose?
If so, then why bring it up?

I must admit I've always prefered the phrase "my faith helped
me concentrate and play my best" as oppose to the more popular
"Jesus was with me". The former says you won, and part
of your ability was your faith. The other does leave the implication
that Jesus was playing favorites some how.

The other Bobby Knight, the basketball one, said it best when
he saw Steve Alford praying before a game. "Steve, if you
think God is gonna help any team of MINE, you're wasting
your time".

I played 4 rounds of golf with my uncle and his cronies in Az. I
heard a lot about God and Jesus whenever they chunked a chip, 3
putted, or put one in the desert.

To Zach's credit, he said a simple statement about his faith. I
didn't hear him say that Jesus made him win. I agree....God has
better things to do.

I completely understand the spirit with which Christians often give credit
to Jesus. What they're really saying is that He was with them (or as some
would say, He's with all who believe) to bring a sense of calm and serenity
in times of turmoil. I got that part. I've even said it myself.

But as a Christian (and an admittedly imperfect one at that), I also think
it actually CHEAPENS one's faith when it's expressed in these types of
settings. To say that "I won because Jesus was with me" is like saying "He
was with me, and it's a good thing he wasn't with my nearest competitors or
else I'd have been toast," as if one is claiming a unique pipeline to the
Almighty To claim such a thing expresses a degree of selfishness and
self-centeredness that, in my view, is the very opposite of what the
Christian faith espouses.

I know it's intended in a spirit different than the one it seems to convey.
But it does convey that wrong spirit to me, and I know it does to many
others. Including many Christians. God does, indeed, have better things to
do than interfere with the outcome of a golf tournament.

There. Now I've broached both subjects one should never bring up for
discussion -- religion and politics.

And on this one, I won't go much further.

I guess that Jesus wasn't with everyone else, then. You wouldn't think

But it does have something to do with Jesus "being there, every step of the
way" with those who didn't get to bask in victory by winning The Masters.

Seems that all Zach was saying is that "feeling Jesus with him" gave him
comfort, and that the calm helped him to play well. I very much doubt that
if you asked him, Zach would say that "Jesus picked me to win and was not
with anyone else." I would think that Badds, DL3, and the other professing
Christians on the tour would tell you that Jesus was with them that day, but
no one was interviewing them.

Jesus might have been with Tiger as well, but since Tiger seems to be pretty
areligious (except when he makes a bad shot), that presence might not have
had much impact on him.

JHC - it's all such crap.

"I want to thank my personal God for being with me every step of the way -
regardless of the outcome - since he doesn't really effect the outcome -
because that would be unfair - but it makes me really feel good to tell you
that I *feel* like he was with me and helped me win. I won because my
personal relationship with Jesus is much closer than the other guys on Gods
team - and He is a little miffed right now with the Jews and Muslims and
especially those Mormons and Scientologists. Heck, I ate fish on Fridays
all lent long, and got up to go to church at 5am so I could play in the
Tournament. I was reborn on the 4th of July. God can't hit a 1-iron, but
with Jesus as my caddie - I can."

Sort-of the continued trivialization of Christ/God/Religion. The mindless
wearing of your "faith" on your sleeve.

WWJD? Brag about how he made the win possible? That *this* was the most
important project he had for the week?

What about the explosion on the 16th green when Mohammad set off his
suicide jacket after four putting from 10'? I'd say that was a

How come Christians never thank Jesus when they lose?

"I know I three-jacked that last hole that would have gotten me into a
playoff, but I thank my Lord and Savior for being there with me and causing
that second putt to lip out to prevent the embarrassment of me losing in a
playoff and having to make that walk back up the 10th fairway."

I'd really like to think my Savior has better things to do on Easter Sunday
than concern himself over who wins a golf tournament.
