Subject: It is time to come clean about Larry
All,

Thank you for taking part in our experiment. The person you know as Larry,
is in fact a sophisticated artificial intellegence program designed to pass
the Turing Test. The Turing Test was proposed in 1950 by Professor Alan
Turing to test a computers ability to engage in natural human conversation.
A computer program which passes this test would be indistinguishable from
speaking with another human being.

Larry is currently 20 Terabytes of code, rules and data, and uses a
sophisticated neural network to process information. Larry is unaware that
he is not real, and lives in what we have come to call a "construct" (after
the movie "The Matrix") which resembles a comfortable life in southern
California.

We modelled Larry after the brother of the Project Manager - who has
extensive mental and cognitive information available from several state
institutions, and who among other things is obsessed with golf. If Larry
seems a bit self-important, it was because we found that people mostly read
things on the web, and seldom write. We needed Larry to seek the center of
attention.

We continue to learn many things from Larry V4.0 and plan to keep him online
for an extended period. Please interact with him - like you would any
human - we felt that since Larry has passed the Turing Test that the public
should be made aware that he isn't real. Part of his programming will
prevent Larry from integrating the concept that he is a program into his
perception of reality (the construct).

Thank You,
A. Clarke

Actually, he never said goodbye this time. He just left. Hopefully
he'll return. He's a fun guy!

A "gimme" can best be defined as an agreement between
two golfers neither of whom can putt very well.

Well... IMO anyway.

Threads like this only support larry's claim that he owns this newsgroup.

The artificial larry story is not too far fetched. There are a lot of
glitches and closed loops in larry's postings.

Maybe. But it sure helps explain a few things.
