Golf is an individual game not a team game, and is best suited for
loner types and few blacks are like that though many white people are.
Blacks aren't very visible in tennis either( excepting the williams
sisters) and you can't say it's because it takes a lot of money for a
kid to play tennis. Blacks are sociable and prefer team sports.

Can anyone think of an individual sport where blacks are common?? I
don't follow auto racing but i don't think there are many blacks
competing there.

It was a very interesting competition - perhaps the only time (apart
from 1968?) when high jump has had centre stage. Stones was entirely
responsible for that bit, at least.

Having lived in the south & having alot of 1st hand knowledge of our
brothers, I would say it is more social & economic reasons. The REAL
deep south (ms,la,ga,ala,TX) is still very racist, I think the
brothers are not welcome. Also alot of poor people live in the cities,
not a golf course in there back yard. There is a basket ball rim
though. It's also said baseball is not as many blks now . Most are
latino, dominicon. The whole nascar thing (no blks) is definatly a
race thing. The good ole boys ain't having no part of a blk racer.

Did the ranks of recreational golfers grow when Nicklaus was at his
peak? Palmer? Hogan? Taking up golf requires a huge commitment of
money and time. I can't believe that Tiger has inspired all that many
people to make that commitment.

There are also more affluent people who can afford it. I suspect the
aging of the baby boom has something to do with it, too; middle-aged
men like me who used to play basketball, softball, soccer, etc. need
something less strenuous and less likely to get them injured. I doubt
seriously that Tiger has much to do with it.

I can see that. I remember long ago during the Olympics when Dwight Stones
was winning gold in the high jump. Every kid on the block had a bunch of
mattresses piled up in the backyard as makeshift high jump pits.

Go into sub middle class neighborhoods check out the access to golf
courses. Also go to those school systems and find tennis teams. My
point is that most who played golf or tennis are those who came from
families with higher than average incomes.. white black or whatever.
Tennis and Golf have been, and somewhat still are.. class/wealth
related and not gender/race. AS the pendulumn swings it will change.

Are you a dolt? Your remarks are from both ignorance and anger. If
your immediate social structure was that racing was a big influence in
your family there's a far greater chance you would race or want to
race. I never had an affinity to golf. My family didn't play it, did
not belong to a country club and access to it was cost prohibitive at
the time. Of course i could practice in some park or in the yard give
sizable property, but there was no impetus for me to play.

All that changed for many when tiger came to town. He broke down the
barriers of an exclusive all white pompous sport to one that was cool
and hip. He made fat out of shaped 70/80's golfer get some core
strength to keep up. The influence he has cannot yet be realized.

My example is I now play golf. Why? I learned I could hit the ball a
country mile compared to most I've played with.. so I stuck with it.
Hence, my son does what I do, so there's a chance he will grow up
wanting to play. This will play out a generation down the road. The
same will happen when we all see the diversity in golf a generation
from now.

Those usually do what their friends do and what they are comfortable
with. It's not rocket science buddy. Get a clue.. b00b

Pro Wrestling and RUNNING. Fact is that tennis and golf need to get up
to speed with whom has access to it. Those sports are generally played
by folks whom have money or their parents have money. To excell at
those sports usually means you grew up in a family that had routine
access to golf clubs and tennis courts.. i.e. country club living. I
think it will take a generation from Tiger to really see more
diversity in that sport IMO

Tiger's most important/influential mark has not even been recognized
yet. But your kids will.

Pro wrestling is not exactly a sport and besides most wrestlers are
white. There are a lot of black track stars but still it's not a big
sport. As for tennis, don't tell me it's a sport for rich people.
Tennis courts are everywhere and the equipment expense is minimal. But
blacks aren't interested.

As mentioned by Bill H., boxing is an individual sport that blacks flock
to. I still can't think of any other.

Not as common as they used to be. Fortunately, this is an indication
of how far they have come. Show me the people who dominate boxing and
I'll show you the bottom rung on the social ladder.

I'll be nice about this, since I don't like to pick on the
developmentally disabled. I didn't say black people can't afford to
play golf. I said they are less likely than white people to play golf
because of socioeconomic differences, not because they're more
"social" than white people.

Black people not playing golf has nothing to do with the collective
personality that you stupidly ascribe to them. Black people are more
likely to be poor than white people are, and that means they live in
places where there are no easily accessible golf courses, they can't
afford to buy clubs, they can't afford green fees, etc.

Even so, if you go to any of the three (I think) municipal golf
courses in Washington DC, where I live, you will see lots of black
people playing.

"...and few blacks are like that...". Wow. Go back and read what
Annika1980 said about the social and economic environment which
influences participation in sports by blacks. You might learn
something. I don't think it'll change your prejudice, but you might
begin to understand how stupid the above sounds.

(sigh) As usual, you "respond" with childish namecalling. No wonder you
don't have any friends.

No namecalling at all, merely a hope that you do not reproduce. I wish
that fate for bigots generally, so don't take it personally.

The most famous black NHL players are a goalie and an enforcer. Not
the most sociable positions.

I see lots more black adults playing golf than before. They may
have been persuaded by Tiger (and their aging bodies) to take up golf.
Golf is a sport with strong family ties - Tiger's favorite golf was
with his Dad. The next generation of black golfers might be only
indirectly influenced by Tiger - they would be more influenced by
their fathers who were influenced by Tiger.
