Subject: I really suck at golf
Temps in the upper 70s today. Weekend looks far less promising. And with
Winter soon to descend upon us, I decided to play hookey today and get in a
round of golf before the cold weather hits. (Yes, it gets cold here in the
South -- well, cold for us anyway -- and I've grown far less tolerant of it
in my old age.)

Well, I didn't hit the ball especially well, but I scratched it around on
the front nine for an acceptable 5-over, parring every other hole, including
the #1 hdcp hole on the course. Rolled in a 30-footer on #1 to save bogey
to get the day started on...well...a fairly good note.

Then the bottom fell out. On #10, I hung the drive out to the right and it
headed straight for the trees. But it bounced back out, well back from
where I'm used to hitting my drives on that hole. No problem, it's a par
five, so I figured I still had a chance to keep things going. The ball came
to rest on a very bare lie, and I took out my 3-wood and made a swing.
CLANNNNGGGG!!!! It felt like the head flew off, but it didn't. The ball,
however, hit the only tree in my line (which happens to be right in the
middle of the fairway). I looked down and the head was still attached to
the club, but a giant gouge was taken out of it by a rock that lay hidden
beneath my ball. Nice. I just bought these clubs in late September, and I
loved this 3-wood.

Well, I nearly saved par, just missing a 25-foot putt (after I hit my 5th
shot from a fairway bunker to the green). But it was all downhill from
there, and I won't bore you with the details. Suffice it to say I didn't hit
more than one or two good shots on the back side. I guess the only one
worth mentioning was a bunker shot on 17. I missed the fairway badly and
had to pitch out, then hit my hybrid a little left of the green. I'd hoped
it would find the bunker, which it did. But as the old saying goes, be
careful what you wish for or you just might get it. The ball was in a spot
in the bunker where I had to either stand outside the bunker and bend over
so my back was parallel to the ground in order to reach the ball which was
easily a foot below my feet, or get down on my knees and swing that way. I
chose the latter option, and managed to get the ball out on the green. Not
close, but on the green within about 15 feet of the cup. That was enough
for it to be a good shot.

By the end of the round, I was strangely glad that the season may have wound
down for me. I played more this year than in recent years, but I need some
time away, and to get my game back in some semblance of shape for the
Spring. It's no fun stinking up the joint like I have these last few rounds
with only the occasional shot to "make me come back."

Right after I got home, I phoned Callaway and asked them what they could do
in the way of repairing my new 3-wood that was damaged on the 10th hole
today. Frankly, I didn't expect much more than them saying they could buff
it a bit and make it look a little better. But the lady was very
accommodating, and a brand new club is being shipped to me, free of charge.
And when it arrives, I'll use their box and their pre-paid UPS shipping
label to send back the damaged club. As I've said so many times in the
past, Callaway's customer service is second-to-none. They didn't have to
offer to give me a new club, but that's exactly what they did. You just
can't beat Callaway in how they treat their customers. It's no wonder their
customers tend to be very loyal. The new club should be here middle of next
week. Heck, that might even be enough to get me to go out and play one more
time before Old Man Winter blows into town.

You said #10 was..a par five, I guess it really is a par 6?

Did you really play golf..I mean actually get your butt out onto the
course, or is this just a pretend 'golf' post to say that you do post
other then political, off topic, here?

My bad. It should have said "after my 4th shot from a fairway bunker to the
green." Good catch. It *is* a par five.

Ever go skiing? There are fabrics you can wear to keep you warm
without
binding your swing. On the other hand, I don't play in uncomfortable
weather anymore, either.

I know about those clothes, but I'm with you on the weather.

Thursday - 75, bright sunshine, shorts and polo shirt
Friday - 70, overcast, windy, long pants and polo shirt
Today - 41, overcast, windy - good day to clean the clubs!

No, oddly the cheesburger was eaten before I teed off on #1.

Just curious, but how cold is too cold? I live in Colorado and we play, off
and on, pretty much all winter. I do have criteria ... sun out and 45
degrees or more. The local muni puts in 4 or 5 cups per green and each
group rotates the flag to a new hole location (assuming the flag is not
frozen into the cup!) ... frozen greens can be fun!

The interesting thing about Colorado Winter golf is that our balls
roll farther, and the native grass is sparse. And the balls are
more likely to skip out of water traps.

And how comfortable we feel depends entirely on whether the sun's out
- and it usually is.

Well, Bob, I've thought about that and thought about that.
But I don't get it. What's the purpose?

My criteria used to be pretty much the same as yours -- 45 degrees or
higher, sun out (preferably, but I wouldn't necessarily stay in if it was
cloudy), and relatively little wind (to create the dreaded wind chill
effect).

But over the years, my temp threshold has raised somewhat. I'd say 50 is
closer now, and on some days, I just don't bother if it's below 55.

When you get right down to it, my deal is this: If I have to wear so many
layers of clothing to stay warm that I feel too bound up to make a free golf
swing, it's like, why bother?

FWIW, I have the following winter golfing equation.

- 40 degrees, sunny, not damp, little wind is comfortable
- Breezy - you need another 5 degrees
- no sun - you need another 5 degrees
- Windy - you need another 10 degrees
- damp - you need another 5 degrees

So a windy, cloudy 55 degree day is fine, but about the same as a 40 degree
sunny, no breeze day. Anything below "35 relative degrees" is pushing it, in
my book. I once played on a damp/windy 38 degree day. We lost half our
foursome at the turn and the remaining two of us abandoned our cart and
walked the back side of a tough walking course. That was definitely past my
limit.

Here in NJ... 40 is my lowest limit... unless it's shoveling snow...

Bob

Living same latitude as R&B, just 90 miles West, I find 50 degrees with
small wind is quite enjoyable. Last year, I walked at least 9 holes 21
times in December. By 1300, I can be out. Of course, being retired makes
it much easier than working people who have to hope the weekend is nice.
