a former golf pal of mine. So that's like shooting two stones with

If you ever get a chance to see the Presidential motorcade pass,
you'll want to stay on the sidewalk and not run out to greet him.

After Bush got to the Convention Center to do his little publicity
stunt, I walked back to the office. I needed some lunch and I almost
went to a BBQ joint called Porkers where I often eat and which is one
of my accounts (I usually eat free there). I figured it would be too
crowded there since it is near the Convention Center so I didn't go.
So guess where that sumbitch Bush has his limo pull over on the way
out so he could get some BBQ? You got it!
Damn! I almost got to buy that prick a pork plate!
Zach was still with him so I'll bet I could've scored a round at
Congressional.

Sparky hits it a looong way. He gets better every time I play with
him. I think he's beaten me the last couple of times we played as he
should, him being an assistant pro and all. Last year I think I only
played half a dozen rounds. But who knows, I may crank it up this
year and play 10-11.
Once it warms up a bit, we'll see if his game has continued to
improve.

There is a profound problem with killfiles. Months later, one cannot
remember what offending post motivated the entrance into killfile. There
should be a notes field next to a killfile entry. At this point; I have
no idea whatsoever as to why I threw Annika in the killfile. I can only
assume he was being overly rude (is that possible on Usenet?), or was being
racist / anti-Semitic; which are two reasons I usually throw someone into
the killfile without giving them a second chance.

c Rich was selling arms to Charles Taylor (Liberia), who funneled some
weapons to the Hutu's. Well, and c Rich was also donating $10 million
to Clinton's Presidential Library as bribe for a Presidential pardon. I
brought that up because I find it laughable that Clinton was the hero that
stopped one genocide, while being the goat that allowed another to occur.
It made me keenly aware that the only difference between one asshole
(Milosivic) and another (Charles Taylor & c Rich) is that USA liked one
and disliked another. But both assholes were cut from the same cloth.
Did you ever see a Nicolas Cage movie called Lord Of War? That was loosely
based on Taylor and Rich.

Never seen a ship with the flag off the bow...but many times off the stern.
Seen it painted on the tails of aircraft too, but never on the nose. Seen it

There is a chance this might change. With big states such as
California moving their priies up, lots of money will be needed
soon in the race to buy the nomination. Washington insiders have
the inside track for this money.

The next question is what will the rest of the country think of
California's selection? Will they go along with it or will they select
another candidate? It will be interesting to see what happens.

Then he taught Constitutional Law back in Chicago.
You make all of that sound so easy that anyone could do it.
I think it would be refreshing to have a President that understands
what the Consitution is and doesn't refer to it as "just a goddamn
piece of paper."

I think Carter was worse, so was Harding. Carter's response to

Y'know, this is precisely the problem with America.
I remember quite well the sentiment that swept this country -- especially
among its redneck element (which was quite prevalent in Texas, where I
lived, at the time). I was a disc jockey on a top-40 radio station in 1980.
Our program director had instructed us to play a locally-produced parody
song. Sung to the melody of the Beach Boys' "Barbara Ann," the song was
titled "Bomb Iran." Bomb-bomb-bomb, bomb, bomb Iran..." I remember quite
well that the only people who called up to request it were the most
infantile, barely literate (and often drunk) redneck muthafockers you've
ever heard. And yet essentially the same sentiment swept the nation --
perhaps not to actually "bomb Iran," but to take the macho approach and
punch the bully right square in the mouth, which is exactly the type of
approach that has gotten us into this bag of shiit the world is in right
now. Funny, but Bush reminds me very much of those drunken yokels who used
to phone up the request line at the radio stations -- simple-minded, prone
to violence to resolve conflict, etc. Come to think of it, I was in Houston
at the time. It might have actually been Dubya and his drinking buddies.
In many ways, in 1980, what America really wanted was to have John Wayne as
its President -- somebody to ride in on a horse and rassle the bad guys and
put 'em in a full nelson, or just shoot 'em dead. But "the Duke" was
already in his grave by that time, and Ronnie Ray-Gun was the closest thing
available.
Today it seems America is finally starting to wise up and realize that this
kind of Cowboy justice is not so effective as a foreign policy. But I'm not
sure the conservative wing of the country has yet begun to grasp WHY. They
(you) still think a John Wayne type leader is in our best interest. He is
not, and never has been. Why? Because "ready, fire, aim" is not a foreign
policy.

and would welcome the opportunity.
I can name several Presidents who I think were bad Presidents. But I can't
think of another one who has damaged the nation to the extent this President
has, and with such lingering consequences. We will be paying for his poor
judgement, both at home and abroad, for generations to come.

This one used to. In fact, never in the past century or two has there been
more goodwill and outpouring of warm wishes been extended in America's
direction than it was in the immediate aftermath of 9/11
But Dubya changed all that, and squandered all that goodwill at the same
time, turning it into resentment and hatreds, not only from our natural
enemies, but from former friends.
Arrogance is not a foreign policy. It is a Republican party platform.

Truman, is an example of this. LBJ's policies about civil rights
weren't popular either, but he was dead right to implement them. Same
with Ford pardoning Nixon. Go ahead and pay attn. to the polls, just
like Bubba did. I prefer a president that follows his convictions,
regardless of the direction of the wind.

It's a fact that Bush won election twice...fair and square. It was messy
the first time (even those who support him would have to admit that). But
he won election to the White House, fair and square.
It's also a fact that more people voted for his opponent in 2000.

LBJ's decreasing popularity had little to do with his signing the Civil
Rights Act into law (except in the South), and had more to do with the
ever-escalating war in Viet Nam.
For some reason that I still find utterly baffling, ever since John Kerry
won the Democratic Presidential nomination in 2004, and to this very day,
conservatives continue to advance this ridiculous revisionist history about
the Viet Nam war. That was was a mistake then, and the whole country came
to realize it. Yet for some reason, I continue hearing these silly
arguments from the right about what a noble war it was. Hell, it tore this
nation apart, much the same was the Iraq War is doing now.
As the old saying goes, if you don't learn from history, you are doomed to
repeat it.

Ford pardoning Nixon is one of the most boneheaded moves in history. It
sent the clear signal that Presidents *are* above the law, and denied
justice to the entire nation Clearly, the nation agreed with me, as Ford's
pardoning of Nixon didn't "heal" the nation at all, it merely sealed Ford's
fate in his effort to be elected President. This was proven by the fact
that in 1976, the nation rejected Jerry Ford, a skilled leader whose only
serious mistake was pardoning Tricky Dick, in favor of a relatively unknown
peanut farmer from Georgia. I can't think of any other election in the 20th
Century when someone with Carter's credentials (or lack thereof) could have
ever been elected President. Can you? Heck, I think you or I could have

As long as your convictions match up with the President's, I'm sure you'd
believe that.
But what if a President were in the White House who DIDN'T agree with your
convictions, and yet your convictions were clearly in harmony with the vast
majority of America's citizens? I suspect you would, as many of us on the
left do, resent the fact that the President DOESN'T pay closer attention to
the polls. After all, he's there to represent THE PEOPLE (not just HIS
people). He even said in BOTH of his inaugural addresses that he would be a
President for ALL the people, not just those of his party.
But of course, this President has said a lot of things he never made good
on.

Taken responsibility, for one. But it's a moot point.
I didn't and still don't like Bill Clinton, but I have very little
doubt that the 9/11 attacks could not have happened under his or
any other modern president's watch, other than the one we have
right now. His dad's administration would have foiled the plot,
Reagan's would have, Carter's would have. I think you'd have to
go back to Harding to find an administration as disinterested in
governance as this one has been.

Yesterday, Bush made the comment that he's tired of all the partisan
politics. I didn't notice him piping up about that before the Repugs
got clobbered in the last election. Before that, he was acting like
an arrogant king who is above the law. Bush reminds me of some people
I know who are assholes all their lives and then try to be nice to
everybody when they turn 75 or so. But by that time, they have no
friends left and they wonder why nobody will have anything to do with

suburban Philadelphia military airbase. I was on an off ramp of the PA
Turnpike when 1000 state troopers locked down both directions of the highway
in less than one-and-a-half minutes. Four helicopters hovered overhead with
gun barrels glaring in the sunlight.
Amazingly enough I had the same urge you had; however when I opened my car
door to get a better look I was told via helicopter bullhorn to get back
into my vehicle immediately. I wondered if they were going to shoot that
finger right off my hand - I took my chances. I must say, it felt good to
get that out of my system.
You're a hell of a photographer - really liked the hummingbird and Hawaii
shots more than the bush stuff!

My father was a State Trooper detective, in charge of the local
enforcement when Reagan came to town. He was astonished as to the
advance preparation involved.

Imagine that you are blindfolded and told that the food you are about to eat
is ice cream. It turns out to be chicken liver. Or imagine that you think
you are diving into warm water but instead it turns out to be near-freezing.
This is pretty much what it is like to be governed by Republicans, and there
is no better case in point than George W. Bush. He, like all Republicans
since the 1920s, campaigned as a shrink-the-government man. More incredibly
to recall, he blasted the "nation-building" of Bill Clinton and insisted
that the US needed a "humble" foreign policy.
What we got instead is, well, what we got, is the polar opposite. The man
who wailed over Bill Clinton’s big government has made Clinton’s spending
record look great by comparison. The guy who decried "nation-building" has
decided that bombs and tanks are a great means to inspire a wholesale
upheaval in the Gulf region.
What’s interesting here is what motivates big-government Republicanism. The
party itself has no strong investment in the public sector as it currently
stands, apart from the prison bureaucracy and the military. Most civil
servants and teachers and postal workers support the Democrats, knowing full
well who is buttering their bread. Republicans, essentially, see the public
purse as something not to conserve but to rob and give to those who do vote
Republican.
Thus is the government contracted out – and vastly so. Thus are religious
charities eligible for public funding. Thus are private schools encouraged
to get on the dole. Thus are industrialists eligible for every privilege one
can imagine. Heck, if you are big enough and powerful enough, the
Republicans might even start a war on your behalf. This gets very expensive
indeed, even more expensive than old-fashioned, reformed-minded,
repair-the-schools, renew-the-cities, make-the-government-work social
democracy!
And you know how the left says that the Republicans care nothing for your
privacy or for individual rights? The Republicans seem to be living up to a
caricature of their reputation. Anyone who questions whether the FBI ought
to be permitted to tap your phone or read your email, or whether the CIA
ought to be able to lock people up forever without a formal charge, is
denounced as a leftist.
Where have Republican grassroots been? Here we find disgrace. They were
charmed by Bush going into all this, and they have not ceased to be loyal.
Yes, along the way – this always happens – some of the rank-and-file become
irritated that Bush isn’t doing more to stand up to the Democrats. But a
Republican White House always, always, always knows how to deal with this
problem. The prez sets up a 15-minute meeting with "conservative leaders" at
which they fawn all over him. They then report back to their minions that
the president is a great guy and needs our support. Most people comply since
they fear the devil Democrats more.
As for foreign policy, my goodness, the rank and file are gullible in the
most ghastly way. These people went from scorning Clinton’s exertions in
Somalia to calling anyone who doesn’t support the war on Iraq a traitor to
America itself. The display of Nazi-style jingoism has been nearly
unbearable. The flag is worshipped as a holy object, the national anthem is
treated as a sacred hymn, every character in a military costume is
canonized, and the president himself is exalted as a godhead incarnate. Now
we know – because we are living through it – the stuff of which fascism is
made.
We could go on. But rather than decry the hypocrisy, lies, and unrelenting
bamboozlement, it would be more productive to examine the underlying social
theory that leads Republicans to campaign one way and govern another.
Elsewhere we discussed how the Democrats believe in a conflict-based model
of society, with their imagined society consisting of groups of warring
tribes (men v. women, blacks v. whites, etc.). In the same way, the
Republicans imagine that the social order is rife with conflict, but a
conflict of a different sort.
Republicans believe that all of society, whether your town, the nation, or
the whole world, is divided between those who adhere to the law and those
who are inclined to break it. These they define as good guys and bad guys,
but it is not always true since the law these days is not the law written on
our hearts but rather the rules as laid down by state masters. But this
seemingly important point is completely lost on the Republican mind, since
they believe that without the state as lawmaker, all of society and all of
the world would collapse into a muddle of chaos and darkness.
This view they get from Hobbes. Not that the average buyer of Ann Coulter’s
books reads political philosophy. They rather accept a popular version of
the fundamental anti-liberal idea: society is a wreck without Leviathan.
This is why they celebrate the police more than merchants, why they think
that war deserves more credit than trade for world prosperity, why they call
drafted killers for the state the "greatest generation," whereas the
pioneers of the 19th century are merely historical curiosities.
In short, their meta-understanding of politics bypassed the liberal
revolution of the 18th century and embraced the anti-liberal elements of the
Enlightenment. Up with Hobbes, down with Locke: that is their implied creed.
Liberty is fine but order, ORDER, is much more important, and order comes
from the state. They can’t even fathom the truth that liberty is the mother,
not the daughter, of order. That thought is too complex for the Manichean
mind.
Now, it is true that Republicans tend to be better on issues of welfare,
environmentalism, social legislation and the like. They reject
egalitarianism, more or less, and have no strong beef with business. But
none of this matters in the defense of liberty because they are
intellectually wedded to the state in the most fundamental way. They believe
that it and not voluntary cooperation is the source of order in society, and
what they fear more than anything is revolution. Freedom, to them, is not a
right but something conferred as a reward for good behavior.
It is a curiosity that these same people tend to herald the Declaration of
Independence. This was a revolutionary document that postulated that
government was the source of disorder, and imagined that society could be
forged in absence of the state. The replacement government under the
Articles of Confederation was a government in name only, and like the
anarchy that Republicans fear more than anything else.
I once heard a leading Republican intellectual, a respected figure with lots
of books on everyone’s shelves, express profound regret when the Soviet
Union was falling apart. The problem, from this person’s perspective, is
that this led to disorder, and order – meaning control even by the Soviet
state – is the fundamental conservative value. That about sums it up. Even
communism is to be tolerated so long as it keeps away what they dread more
than death: people within their rights doing whatever they want.
But these days we see all around us how liberty generates order and how this
order is self-sustaining. We live in private communities. We see the
glorious world of the web. We benefit daily, hourly, minute-by-minute, from
an order that is not imposed from without but rather generated from within,
by that rekable capacity we have for pursuing self-interest while
benefiting the whole. Here are the great mystery and majesty of social
order, expressed so well in the act of economic exchange.
Republicans by contrast live intellectually in a world long past, a world of
warring states and societies made up of fixed classes that fought over
ever-dwindling resources, a world unleavened by enterprise and individual
initiative. They imagine themselves to be the class of rulers, the
aristocrats, the philosopher kings, the high clerics, the landowners, and to
keep that power, they gladly fuel the basest of human instincts:
nationalism, jingoism, and hate. Keeping them at bay means keeping the world
of their imaginations at bay, and that is a very good and important thing
for the sake of civilization.

Some problems don't have solutions - but I'd like to see some
proposals by both parties on how to keep small rural towns alive.
I'd like to see candidates of both parties to be strict
Constutionalists. That means the Supreme court doesn't make laws -
and it means the administration doesn't pretend that what they do in
Cuba doesn't apply.
I don't want to see a *cure* for offshore competition that's worse
than the disease (and as bad as that disease is for me - protectionism
will be worse for future generations and the country).
My wife's mad at the illegals - but I have read history and see that
claiming it is about the "illegal" part is fooling ourselves - we
hated the Irish, the Polish, the Italians, the Chinese - whomever were
willing to work for less than us and who didn't have our values. Don't
make laws based upon such fear and hatred.
Keep Church and State separate.
Don't saddle our grandchildren with our debt.
Set an example for our enemies to emulate. If we don't want them
acting the way we do - we need to change ourselves. (The Golden
Rule)
If you are following a party line that others have created with
compromise and their own self interests, then you aren't thinking for
yourself and betraying your values (including the country).

Yep. I had to stay within 1 hour of work in case SHTF. Still managed to get
out and party like it was 1999. Was pretty normal here as well. Dealing with
Y2K7 now. :-)

While I'm sure that there are a ton of folks that wouldn't get past
those things, many if not most of them probably don't vote anyway.
Obama's biggest asset is that he makes people feel good about the
country and that there is hope out there to correct some serious wrongs.
In that he reminds me of a couple previous presidents that were able to
do that, even when you didn't agree with them. Reagan and Kennedy. As
people get more tired of the same old politicians spouting the same old
crap they've been feeding us all from both sides, and people also start
noticing that the radio/tv yakkers and blog-o-nuts are just nuts, we
might just see a different thing happen.

crying out loud. George W. probably couldn't even spell Rhodes Scholar. In
fact, I'd bet about a month's pay that he couldn't.
