Subject: How long does it last?
Reading an article lately about how long golf balls last made me curious how
long all the gear lasts. (It's a rotten cold day here and I've got time on
my hands) I play a lot of golf (probably close to 200 rounds a year) and a
lot of my gear dies young. Here is what I get out of my gear and as a
result what it actually costs me per round.

Balls -- 2 rounds, if I don't lose it, one in good condition and one to play
on holes where I may lose it. They cost me nothing though (between company
logo balls and balls won in competitions I haven't bought balls in years.)

Golve -- 2 months (40 rounds) that's about a quarter a round.
Shoes -- 2 years and 150 rounds (I have more than one pair in play at any
point in time. That's maybe 75 cents at the price I pay
(I buy mainly dryjoys. Keeping out the water is the top concern and no
others seem to come close in durability)
Spikes -- 2 months (20 rounds) 50 cents. More than I would have thought.
Bag -- 1 year (200 rounds) Another 50 cents. They used to last longer, but
in recent years I've killed a bag a year.
Grips -- 1 year (200 rounds). Maybe another quarter -- I replace them
myself.
Clubs -- last forever, but let's say 5 years or a thousand rounds. Given
I've made my last two sets that's about 50 cents a round.

So my equipment cost is about $2.75 a round. Not bad I suppose, but I
suspect it would be a lot higher for someone who played less often than I
do.

If it last more than 4 hours... brag about it... :)

Any stats are fun, and I like these a lot. I played with a couple of
guys 3 weeks ago, both trying to sell me some no-name knock-offs for
$160 a set. I glibly replied that since my sets last (a minimum of) 5
years, the difference in per round cost between their $160 set and my
$500 set wouldn't be very much. It's funny how right I was :)

Using your figures, it would be 16 cents vs. 50 cents per round for a
difference of 34 cents.
So, all else being equal, either $2.36 or $2.75. Doesn't really seem
worth it, does it? Especially when you figure my 5 year old clubs are
still worth $100, so it's not 50 cents / round, it's 40 cents per
round. That's $2.34 versus $2.65 (or 31 cents).

Thanks, that was fun.

I don't get it. How is 1 year of golf 200 rounds, but 2 months is 20
rounds???

40 rounds for a golf glove.. Wow. I must go through 10 gloves a year
(about 70 rounds). I practice a fair amount, though.

I get 40 rounds out of a glove (which is like 2 years for me) easy and I
play with full cord grips on all of my clubs.

Doesn't your last paragraph assume that these items wear out when
they are NOT in use?

If items are stored improperly when not in use (shoes allowed
to curl up when stored wet or clubs kept in the trunk of
the car during temperature extremes) then I suppose there could
be some degredation.

Alas, I don't think I'll ever be bored enough to do those
calculations. :)

Of an "average amoeba" no less.

Actually, I think I tested in the 65th percentile of naked rhizopod
protozoans with lobed and never anastomosing pseudopodia.

But, what can you expect from somoene without permanent
organelles?

Thanks for the good wishes, nonetheless.

Keep up the good work.

I graduated in the top third of my single celled eukaryotes class with
a major in Ciliate Studies. Those diploid and polyploid nuclei
really came in handy.
