Our club has two croquet fields/courts (or whatever they call them) and one lawn bowling ' big flat grass thing' in addition to the usual/expected practice area. It is a pretty natural fit from a maintenance perspective. I noticed yesterday that they were taking up a bunch of sod on one of the croquet fields. It looked like today they were tamping things down and taking extreme care to get it all level. So I assume that the whole problem here was that that particular area (maybe 20 feet x 80 feet - these croquet fields are BIG) had been inadquately flat. There are a couple of greens at our club that I'd like to see these guys work on next :-) dave

With soil like that, I guess flat would work just fine.

As golf course designers know - flat is terrible for drainage. I suppose if you had enough money, one could have an undersurface that is tilted for drainage.

Golf course surface drainage is a big non-no these days because the greens bitch, moan, and sue about fertilizers, pesticides, etc. draining off. They mentioned that ideally the fields were supposed to be flat, although I imagine they must need to have _some_ drainage. Nice little club you have there, Dave.

For the next several weeks they'll be closing two holes at a time for a major irrigation system upgrade. I'm playing there Friday and hoping that they will be re-working holes 6 and 15 :-) dave ps. I honestly don't know how much drainage is required around here. The 'soil' is little different from beach sand. They don't call it "The Sandhills" for nothing. Before I sodded our back yard, I literally used to practice explosion shots there with my sandwedge there. I've played on any number of courses where the sand in the bunkers was inferior to any old area of my back yard.
