The announcers sure made a big deal about Retief teeing off with an iron on the 13th, even saying the character of the Masters changed at that moment. Yet Masters Champion Zach Johnson didn't go for a single par 5 in two the entire week, but had 11 birdies on these holes. -- Thor

He must be a longer hitter than I thought - I didn't see anyone else do that. I read that ZJ's average driving distance for the week was 265 yards. No wonder he was laying up. I remember when the lengthened the course a few years ago everyone was saying that only the big hitters had a chance. I don't know whether it was because of the firmness of the greens, but there seemed to be a lot more laying up on 13 and 15 this year. I'm not sure if it was ZJ, but I heard one of the commentators say that someone was laying up when they had 190 to the green from the middle of the fairway. We can only speculate what would have happened if Tiger had played a bit more conservatively on 15, punched out, pitched and single putted for a birdie...

All goes back to the concept that its easier to lose the tournament on one hole than to win it. If I had Goosen's beautiful swing, I'd try to snap a 3wood around that corner on 13 every single time. Damn the torpedoes! Full speed ahead. I knew he was done the instant he did that. Hooked 3wood, 4 iron, two putts for birdie, one putt for eagle. Way too conservative. Most full time PGA pros just make 10 or so a year!!. Nothing wrong with playing par 5s as 3 shot holes and making birdies.
