Subject: Golf Course Recommendations in West Virginia
Hi all -- can anyone recommend some nice courses to play in WV? We're
preferably looking for some kind of package deal, but the quality of
the course is the hightest priority.

Anyone familiar with these courses?

Pipestem: http://www.pipestemresort.com/rates_policies.html

Cacapon: http://www.cacaponresort.com/rates/rate_polices.htm

Thanks for any info!

Played both, liked both. Probably Cacapon was the best course.
Pipestem, the best lodge and park. At Cacapon, go into Berkeley
Springs, cool town. AT Pipestem there is a very nice three par to
warm up on. Be sure to ride the aerial tram down to the river lodge
for dinner. Best state park restaurant ever.

I agree that Oglebay and Stonewall may best championship courses.
Laveview at Morgantown is good too.

You're in West Virginia.

How can the quality of ANYTHING be the highest priority?

Oglebay is the best bet for the money. (www.oglebay-resort.com) They
have a Robert Trent Jones course right next to a Palmer course and the
package prices are very good. They used to host an LPGA event and NCAA
has their super-regionals there often. There is also the Lakeview
Resort just outside Morgantown. They often host state amateur
championships. I've heard Stonewall Jackson is excellent as well. I
may be a bit partial - I play the Oglebay courses often and am a
part-time starter there.

Are you the guy that yells at people when they pull their carts up
past the white line near the starter's shack/putting green? I think
it was the Palmer course IIRC but not 100% sure.

When we went a few years back there was some guy who would go postal
if there were two wheels past the white line. I didn't quite get it.
There wasn't any "Stop Here" sign and it was quite a ways from the
first tee. It was very very odd.

Not me, but I know exactly who you are thinking of. We have a real cast
of characters working there in the summer.

I have to admit that we would purposefully pull our carts up just 6"
past the line and then go to the putting green just to annoy that guy.
Tell him we said hello. ;-)

I've never played the course, but the Pipestem State Park is truly
beautiful.

We took a trip to Oglebay a few years back and enjoyed it quite a bit.
They have some rustic style cabins that are really nice. Four
bedrooms and a large open area with a huge fireplace for playing
cards, drinking, etc. The courses were very good.

A big state to cover. But I71 below Morgantown: Stonewall Jackson, and
Arnie Palmer course. Twin Falls near Beckley - built for the miners, but a
very pretty area and nice state park. Glade Springs in Beckley -
semi-private and expensive.
