Subject: Forgetting your putter
What is the rule or general etiquette if you forget your putter?

This happened last week where I went to a corporate golf function.

My friend who invited me said that I could borrow his but the guy running
the show (Dave) said that I had to buy a putter or sit out the day. This
seemed unreasonable but apparently they said there were prizes on offer and
I had to abide by the rules of golf.

As I was looking at the putter rack in the pro shop, my friend went to his
car and got out his umbrella which had an L shaped curve handle. He asked if
this was acceptable and Dave said yes with a smirk on his face. The day was
starting to turn into a farce for me so I said fudge it and put the umbrella
in the bag.

The umbrella felt weird at first but by the 3rd hole I had gotten the hang
of it a little. I am a total hacker so I had no chance to win anything based
on score but since there were prizes offered for each hole I tried to take
it seriously. On the 17th I pitched into the cup after 1 bounce and won a
petrol station gift voucher ($200).

At the dinner when they were handing out prizes, they showed a video montage
of the days golfing and not surprising they showed a clip of my umbrella
putting (I have to admit it was hilarious seeing it ) and also when I holed
it at the 17th. The camera work was great and it looked like a TV highlight.

However at the end of the night Dave approached us and said I had to forfeit
my prize because I had broken the rules by playing an umbrella. I thought he
was joking or drunk (everyone was really pissed that night with
complimentary JD and scotch) but my friend told me to just give it to him so
I did. It was a fun day and I didn't want to get my friend in any strife.

Then later on I saw Dave hand my friend the voucher. I was really shocked
and didn't know what to think. I am trying to forget about it but it still
weighs on my mind. It sickens me to think this was my friend but he had done
a lot for me so I ignored it and don't want to lose a friend over something
trivial. Was he jealous or just a judas?

All this because I forgot my damn putter!

Just F'd up that "Dave" told him to go for it (the umbrella) before the
round, then reneged. Sure a player be responsible for following the
rules, but Dave's action wasn't sportsman-like either.

One part I didn't get was "friend" did he come in second place for that
prize?? If so, maybe splitting it afterward (not involving dave) would
have been nice.

The prize was for having the lowest score on the 17th.

I am willing to forgive my friend, it may just be petty jealousy but I am
definitely keeping a closer eye on him.

Once, whilst angry, I smacked the bottom of my bag with an iron in
competition
after a less than fully pleasing shot. As it happens, I struck the end
of
my putter. The putter head fell off. Not having another putter, I used
my wedge all day, skulled it on every hole, finished with 25 putts.
Works
REALLY well. You need to strike the ball with the bottom of the blade
very close to the center of the ball, but it is very consistent.

Any club that is not made for golf would be unacceptable, the basic
rule of
thumb is it has to conform reasonably to tradition. Definitely not an
umbrella. And if you have 14 clubs in your bag and you break one in
anger,
you are not allowed to replace it. If you have 13 clubs, though, you
can.

If an umbrella was allowable, then lots of people would be carrying
too many clubs.

As others have said, you should have just putted with your 3 iron or 4
iron, or asked the pro shop if you could try out a putter for the round
to see if you wanted to buy it.

In any case, playing with an umbrella was a pretty lame thing to do,
and the fact you were disqualified should not surprise anyone -- I
would have done the same thing.

Many courses have a bag of lost clubs available.

Dave is a total jackass.

If you forget your putter you are allowed to replace it with another putter.
You are also allowed to putt with any club in the bag.

I played in a match play event where my opponent forgot his putter and he
played the entire round putting with his 3-wood. He actually putted fairly
well with the 3-wood.

I don't think putting with an umbrella is legal because the umbrella is not
designed for the purpose of striking a golf ball.

Dave seems like a real jerk as well as your "friend".

Yes, that is quite correct; however, you may not share someone
else's club with them.

The driver is a good choice, as well as a 2-iron.

Nope, the umbrella is definitely not legal. For people who were so
concerned about the OP playing by the rules, they truly botched that
one.
