What is the difference between forged and the other types of irons
that all these companies advertise. How does it help in distance
and accuracy.

When hit by a robot, there is no difference.
When hit by a human -- whose swing may be different due to factors such
as the club's appearance, topline width, the feeling they got the last
time they swung it -- both may be affected. Not to mention,
consistency, plus the ability to bend shots left or right due to
conditions.

Once you get decent at golf (let's say a mid-handicapper), the mental
side of this game gets more important, and continues to do so until you
get to scratch (I've only been as low as an 8, but I can imagine).

Club appearance, how impact felt the last time you hit the ball well,
and a host of other factors will play into how well you hit the ball
the NEXT TIME.

You have asked one of the most controversial questions among
golfers....those players who choose to play forged irons, especially
forged blade-designs, insist they can tell a large difference when
playing.

That difference, however, may not be distance or accuracy.

It may be looks, reputation, feeling in the hands when ball is struck
well, ego, etc.
This is a very mental game we play, so these factors should never be
dismissed without some thought.

Best advice I ever got on this subject: try out different clubs and see
which one you enjoy playing the most. It may not be the set you hit the
furthest or the ones your friends are playing. I started playing with
forged clubs, then tried cast iron cavity backs for several years, and
am now back to forged and playing better than ever. I believe there is
a differnce, even though it may be all in my head.

I agree with the first sentence, and agreed with the second, until I
tried the new Ping S-58 irons. They have a soft and very responsive
feel, quite similar to good forged clubs. I've ordered a 6-iron, and
will be trying it out for a while, hoping I won't give in to temptation
to get the whole set!

If you have hit both and can't tell the difference, you don't know
anything to begin with. A pure strike with a forged blade is hands
down the best feeling in golf. No cast club even comes close.

golfers between the 2 types of clubhead, all else being equal. Of course
all else is never equal that I have seen, so no apples to apples comparison
is ever possible. (For example, forged clubs tend to be more of a blade
style, while cast clubs tend to be more of a cavity back style. There is

Not at all. I play forged mizuno mp33 (1-pw) irons for a few years now and
played cast blades (mcgregor xp/270) before. Had some mild cavity maxfli
evolution irons (cast but very soft material) before that. Never felt much
difference, either between cavity/blade and cast/forged.

The maxfli irons nicked very easily which is usually said about forged
irons. The mizunos are the most durable and somehow they seem to never stop
shining although I never clean em.

The shafts make a lot of difference though...
