Subject: Elbow bursitis surgery question
I've developed a lousy case of right elbow bursitis --- I'm right-handed --
it's been drained twice & had steroids injected without any help. We've
tried the ice & compresses in addition to pills.

My surgeon -- she has already repaired my rotator cuff & a ruptured tendon
in my hand says it's looking like I'll need the bursa sac removed since it
is filling up in one day after draining.

She's found torn cartilage with loose pieces in my elbow but repairing that
is still undecided because it's not really bothering me that I notice too
much -- it may be part of the cause of the bursa swelling & pain.

My question -- have any of you have this surgery & what did it do to your
game + how long were you out of action?

I've looked on the 'net & talked to my surgeon but the range of time seems
wide -- 3 weeks to 12 weeks for recovery --- if the bursa sac is the only
surgery -- obviously if my elbow is opened up for the cartilage -- all bets
are off....

I'm 54 -- in good shape -- don't smoke -- etc...

I bet there's an herbal remedy for busitis and if you do a search on the
net you'll find it. Your quack doctor won't tell you about it cause most
herbals have been around for centuries and can't be patented and so the AMA
won't talk about them. Doctors are the biggest gangsters in america.

Disagree on this point:

When I was needing treatment for an enlarged prostate, herbal/health stores
touted a certain herbal root or thingamagig and made a big deal about it.
When I discussed this with the doctor, he laughed: "What do you think this
medicine is made of?-- the same thing -- in a concentration about 10 times
that of that health store thing!" ANY time I discuss similar things my
doctors are light years ahead of the cult PR releases. Maybe it didn't
uster be like that, but it's different now..

if it was not infected, then that is a very good news, that should

Just got done reading your thread, Brick. It sounds like your Doc is
truly advocating your best interests. She's tried just about
everything short of surgery - now, get to it, Mister. You got *years*
of golf left in ya.

Best of Luck with whatever becomes of it.

No --- I've had golf elbow on my other elbow.

Golf elbow is an inflammation of the tendon on the inside of your elbow --
tennis is the outside.

I have bone spurs & torn cartilage that has inflamed the bursa sac on my
elbow.. It keeps swelling up, getting tender & causing the ulnar nerve to
create havoc with the outside 2 fingers on right hand.

It could be worse - my shoulder kept me off the course for 9 months. This
should be a month (I hope less).

Understood. I had the tendon problem on both sides because I've played both sports. A buddy had the golf version and had the operation, which the doc only considered at 20% success rate. He did it because of the pain and sure enough, two months after the cast came off, the pain was back and he has played little golf since. Mine was painful and pills only helped somewhat. One morning some years ago, I hook up with a guy from Buffalo. During the round, I asked him if he ever saw a buffalo, in that next to the golf course, a guy had a small herd along with some longhorn steer. I went through a small opening in the brush to point it out and while doing that, touched an electric fence. It didn't knock me down but almost. With the large animals there, the fence was cranked up. I played out the hole, hitting a few shots and picking up and putting donw the bag when I suddenly realized, no more pain! It's never come back. Good luck with yours. I would be a bear if I couldn't play.

That was an electrifying story!

I got a cortisone injection for mine last year & then limped along for a few
months with the lingering pain. It did finally subside mostly -- it's to
point now where it reminds it's still there but has not hurt my golf.

The surgery I'm having is more like a 95% success rate.

I saw my buddy last fall and he was surprised I was playing daily with the elbow. He said he was confined to once a week and asked my what kind of treatment I had to get rid of it. I told him he didn't want to know. Lucky.......this time. Good luck with yours. 95% is about as good as it gets. Follow the rehab. You'll be able to brush up on your putting for a few weeks anyway.

That's not going to happen --- I'll try putting ASAP.
My surgeon & I have an understanding based on 2 previous surgeries - she
understands the golf addiction -- she even said that swinging a golf club
will be good therapy when she clears me for it -- she was a physical
therapist before she went back to school to become an ortho.

good luck with the surgery, Doctor talking here, I am assuming that an
infection has been roled out with appropriate cultures! and yes the
recovery can be long,

Yes --- it was cultured & no infection.

I'm going back to see her again this week to beg for more draining attempts
since I just know this snow & ice will be gone any day now. </8^)

I truly think it would not bother my golf swing like it is -- but so many
other things are being hampered...

I have not had surgery on my elbow but I did get a raging infection in
my left forearm which caused the bursa on the elbow to disentigrate an
or disappear.

I have had my arm and hand ortho offer to release the ulnar nerve in my
left hand due to numbness in the pinky and 1/2 of the ring finger in my
left arm so, I am interested in what others have to say about recovery
time for elbow surgery.

Oh yeah --- I forgot to list that as an issue too -- ulnar nerve irritation
that causes tingling more than numbness (so far)...

I guess disintegrated would end up similar to surgically removed -- how has
that worked out? Or can you grip a club with the finger numbness?

The fingers go from numbness to tingling and then to not noticing any
problems at all. The EMGs did not show that the nerve is being pinched
in the elbow and the MRI did not show any problems in the neck.

Gripping a golf club is not a problem but, about 8 years ago I had
problems holding things in my left hand. Often I would drop a coffee
cup, not a mug but a 7-11 type coffee cup. It mad a big mess.

The one thing that really bugs me is the shock pain that I get when I
lift a suitcase by its carrying strap above my head to get the strap on
my shoulder. I get a shock type pain that starts in the elbow and
radiates towards my hand and also toward my shoulder. When I told the
neurologist about it he did the dog look. You know, slightly tilt his
head to the side and give a quizzical look with his eyes.

I really don't like getting old.
