No. But he turned out to be a great general and knew how to handle
people. He was clearly the best choice to head the Normandy campaign,
despite never having experienced any worthwhile action himself.

Yeah, Ike also coined the term "military-industrial complex" and spoke
out
strongly against it - AFTER WWII was over, of course.
My favorite Ike quote was from Sam Snead, who told him about his golf
swing, "You need to put more ASS into it, Mr President!"

I'm starting to think that maybe Eisenhower was really underrated. He was

I don't think he was underrated as General. I believe he was as
President. The fact that he had good men working for him, and few
enough crises sufficiently to allow him time to play golf should not
be an indictment on his competency. Things were good - maybe he was
doing something right.
