A while back I mentioned that we had them bald buzzards all over the place including a nest at the local nine holer. Well I remembered yesterday to take the camera along with me to try and get a couple of pics. So here are they are http://photoshare.shaw.ca/gallery/bearlysane/ The Course is Comox Golf Club which is located in the middle of the town of Comox. The course is a public 9 hole course built on land donated in the 20's and has been established since 1928. Great little course which is first come first serve (no tee times) and is kept in great shape. Par 70 and 5400 yards with a slope/rating of 114/65.7. Fun course that yesterday we (3 of us) got around in just over 3 hours and cost just $20 per. There might have been 5 other groups on the course... might being the key word. The nest is situated right behind the 4th green and it is common to see the eagles build and maintain it. Unfortunately they didn't cooperate and fly low overhead while the camera was out. Around these parts they (eagles) are so common that we tend to forget how lucky we are to live in a place where we see them daily. Later on in the day there was around a dozen of them riding the thermals right in front of the glacier. No pics as they would just be spots with this camera. Cool to watch the big lazy circles as they climb high into the atmosphere to glide off to their feeding areas. The day was perfect for golf in February with a high of 12 (that would be celsius as this is Canada). While the rest of the country freezes we were golfing in short sleeves... First time uploading pics so hopefully this works.

You don't want them to nest on your property - they have more rights to it than you do. I got about 10 feet from one this year when walking the dog. Until you are that close, you can't appreciate how large they really are.

Around these parts it is almost impossible to get very near the bald eagles. There are only a few of them and they tend to build their nests in tall pine trees in remote locations. One of them is right on the river, only approachable by boat. Another is atop a mountain and requires a 3 mile hike just to reach it. And then 3 miles back.

During the fall the pair of eagles that call that nest home were constantly flying from the nest to the cleanup pile by the maintaince shed picking up branches for the nest. Every 2 to 3 minutes an eagle would pass about 50 feet above you... again no camera.

To be fair, Bush has little to do with that. Let's stick to blaming Bush for the senseless deaths in Iraq. Bush will sign documentation to officially take eagles off the endangered species list, but he'll probably also include a signing statement saying that it's OK for him and Dick Cheney to hunt them.

The eagles have no other choice. The runoff of the tons of herbicides, pesticides, and fertilizers from your club have weakened the immune systems of these birds, and now instead of having a range of hundreds of miles, they're forced to hunt close to the land that is slowly killing them. I hear president Bush just removed them from the endangered species list. He's quite the environmentalist.....and golfer.

I played there last summer. Recall having to play around the new born deer. Very enjoyable course.
