Hi. My friends and I are planning a trip to Denver to watch the Giants
play the Rockies in the middle of September and we want to play golf as
well. We're from San Francisco and none of us have been to Denver. I'm
asking for any suggestions anyone has for golf courses to play. We plan
to play on either a Monday or Tuesday and attend the baseball game on
the same night so location somewhat near Coors Field is a plus. We want
to play a nice course though so we'll drive more if we have to. I'm
thinking the couse will probably be about $100 a piece so we're willing
to spend some cash to get on a good course. Thanks a lot and I'll let
you all know what we decide and how it was.

Thanks for the input everyone. Has anyone played Arrowhead golf club?
It wasn't mentioned in this thread but I heard that I should look into
it. (The website for the course doesn't really show much).

Thanks for all the input. Does anyone have any experience playing
Arrowhead golf club? It wasn't mentioned in the thread but I heard
that's it's worth looking into. (The website for the course doesn't
help much).

I played it once, but it was when I really, really needed a break.
Friends and family took me from the hospital where my wife was
recovering from an accident and took me there. It was spectacularly
beautiful and had some nice wildlife - I was new at golf, and really
can't say much about the golf there.

I believe though that American Golf now runs it.

It's called Homestead, similar in terrain and layout to Foxhollow, a
challenging 'little' course.

Just got back from Denver and had a pretty good time. Denver lower
downtown was definitely happening and had plenty of things to do at
nights. Lots of bars, open air lofts, restaurants, etc.
Bring a light jacket as weather condition changes quickly, from light
rain to 80 heat. Day temp varies from day to night of 30 degrees.
Bring sun block since you'll be in the mountains.

As for golf here is my recollection. There are LOTS of golf course out
there so you won't have any trouble finding a course to enjoy. I play
to an 11 so take it for what you will. The course I enjoy are San Juan
Oaks, Cinnabar, Wente, Bridges, Harding, Poppy Hills and Ridge.

Murphy Creek:
good practice facility, pace of play was very good, very windy in the
afternoon, the greens were recently punched and was very apparent on
the back nine, it'll take several more weeks for it to heal. course
offered numerous contours.

Fossil Trace:
somewhat a 'hokey' course. the first hole was a blind tee shot so be
careful. the greens were completely undulating, almost comical and
miniature golf like. the fairways were almost like a skateboarder's
bowl. so least to say this was a big disappointment and wouldn't
recommend.

The Ridge @ Castle Pines:
picturesque golf couse, not a tremendous value at $125.00. Not a
difficult course, greens rolled well, course condtions were in good
shape. The back side was beautiful and overlooked the valley with the
rockies in the backdrop.

Vista Ridge:
easy course, created some decisions to keep driver in the bag and lay
up with irons or if brave, go for the green in one.
nice place to hang out after a round and have a cocktail and take in
the course.

Near Coors Field would be hard. Good public courses tend to be in
the suburbs and beyond. In your price range, you might want to go
to Golden, to http://www.fossiltrace.com/. This is a Jim Engh
design, and Jim has gotten a lot of awards lately. Aurora and the
south have some good courses as well, but I live towards Boulder.

Near me is a Troon course, http://www.vistaridgegc.com/, but that may
be farther away than you want. Between it and the airport is
http://www.riverdalegolf.com/. The Knolls is nice, but ordinary, the
Dunes is more unique. I've tried other courses north and west of
Denver, so if you see something in
http://www.golfviews.com/currentissue.htm or
http://www.cogolf.org/courses.php that intrigues you, let me know.

I don't think she means it has to be within 5 miles of Coors Field.

Forgot to mention, allow plenty of time to get to the game. Traffic is
a bitch around
game time. Have fun!

That would be an interesting football game. Todd Helton might give the
Rockies the advantage.

Riverdale is a great course for the money. 36 holes A little ways away
in Winter Park is Pole Creek. The views are amazing, as it goes right
to the top of the mountain, about 10k elevation. DO NOT play City Park,
unless you are really desperate, as we were
one day, since it was too windy to play anywhere else.

My son lives in Steamboat Springs. He like Murphy Creek, Buffalo Run,
Eagle Trace.
He said he's heard good things about Westwood, but has never played it.
I also
played Thorncreek, and it was OK, but would not be my first choice.

If you only get to play one day, I'd choose Murphy Creek, but I reallly
liked
Pole Creek because of the views.

But I'm sure someone from Denver can give you the real scoop, just
offering suggestions.

A couple of others I've played as a tourist to the area I'd suggest:

Fox Hollow -- On the west side of Denver near Golden -- 3 9's all with a
little different character.
Riverdale is nice -- play the dunes course, the other one is much more
ordinary
If you are going south, consider Bear Dance, which is a little further south
than Castle Rock -- very scenic, lots of elevation changes and the time I
played it (3 years ago) very helpful staff.

It now has an executive 18 attached to it. My son-in-law's father's
men's club is there, but I only played 18 holes at my son-in-law's
bachelor party.

I'm in San Jose and will be going out to Denver over Labor Day. It'll
be our first time out there. We're playing Castle Pines, Vista Ridge,
Murphy Creek, and Fossil Trace. I'll provide an update on these
courses when I get back.

Wow, what a nice selection. Are you playing the real Castle Pines or
the almost-as-nice Ridge at Castle Pines North?
