1) There seems to be different levels of getting your card. Merrick 'had his card' but entered Q school to improve his position. What privileges does the winner of Q School get that someone tied for 30th place does not? I'm assuming that this is different than 'partial exemption' status (like finishing in 140th place on the money list). 2) How did the course assignments work? Clearly the leaders on Monday were all playing the Dye course and I assume that each player played both courses 3 times. Did they just split the field after the 4th round putting the bottom half on the Dye course and top half on the Nicklaus course (reversing things on Monday, of course). Thanks. dave

You can check out the category system at: http://www.pgatour.com/players/pgatour-exempt I guess we are talking about category #25. Is it often the case that some of those guys are left out ?

No. They seem to play as much as they want. B.J. Staten who is the last non-medical #25 played 18 events. Players are invited to participate in events based on their standing in that hierarchy. Most events have approximately 140 to 150 entrants. Players from the Nationwide Tour and qualifying school are placed alternatively on the list after the fully exempt PGA players depending on how they finish. This means if you finish 21st on the Nationwide Tour you will be in approximately the 41st position on the combined list. If you go to Q school and finish above the 21st position, say for example 10th, you would move up to the 20th position on the list. This would mean it would be a lot easer to get into tournaments. John Merrick had a Nationwide card. He was playing for an upgrade to a PGA Tour card. This is from PGA.COM. John Merrick (T4), who finished 21st on the Nationwide Tour money list to earn his PGA Tour card for 2007, is at Qualifying School to improve his position in the Category Rankings for 2007 He is the fourth player attempting to improve his position in this way, joining Sean Murphy (T112 in 1998), David Morland IV (WD in 2003) and co Dawson (WD in 1999). If he finishes among the top 30 and ties, qualfiers will extend to the top 31 and ties -- currently it is not affected as there are 33 players at T29 or better. dave

There's a pecking order to filling a PGA field. Top 125 on money list, then N'wide, Q school, past champions, medical extensions, sponsor exempt, Monday qualifiers, etc. (I'm sure I have the order wrong. It's on line somewhere) If you have FT status with one level of qualification, but want to be assured of getting in more and better events, with more choice, then you can improve your ranking. That's what this guy did. -- Watson deMeneux -Say it out loud next time you're in a restaurant.
