I was thinking of getting some used lefty clubs & playing around. I
know it's hard enough righty but thinking about it...it really is all
mechanics.

I remember an article (perhaps Golf Digest around 1985) showing Mac
O'Grady's swings from both sides. They were almost identical. And at
least when he played on the PGA tour, he swung righty and putted lefty.

I recently bought a Speed Stik and for the first
14 days you're supposed to swing it right and
lefthanded as a baseball swing. With the right
I can manage 107 and with the left 90. Speaks
for itself. BTW I got cut from 8 to 7 within 10
days of using it so it must do what it says on the
label. A couple of very good English cricketers,
Ted Dexter and Brian Close, could play equally
well both righthanded and left. Dexter was said
to have a low single figure handicap both ways.

He told me that he's tried swinging with both lefty (pulling the club
through with his right arm) and righty (pushing the club with his right arm)
but prefers righty. I've seen some pretty good shots, too.

His father if I recall correctly. Had Tiger swinging lefty when
he was a wee one. Tiger suddenly noticed that he was
swinging differently that Daddy and switched sides. Legend
goes that he was as good right as he was left.

The book about Tiger, by his dad, says that Tiger swang from the left
because he was mirroring his dad and switehed when he realized that he
wasn't imitating his dad correctly. There isn't any mention of Tiger being
left handed in any of the books I've read. Isn't it kind of funny that Tiger
realized the mirror thing but apparently Phil didn't

I know Phil learned the game mirroring his dad, which is why
he plays lefty.

Does anyone agree with this notion:

For a right handed golfer, golf is truly a left handed game? When the
left side is in control, so many of the "right' things happen in the
golf swing.

That's why there've been many great players who play with their "non-
dominant" side (Price, Mickelson, Woods(? - I'm not sure if TW is left
handed), Hogan, Miller, etc.).

Hogan was right-handed. The reason why he learned the game left-
handed was because his first club was lefty.

Phil's right handed, but plays left. Tiger is left handed, but plays
right. I gotta figure if there was any advantage, other than the
occasional "trick shot" to switching around very much, at
least one of these two would have figured it out. You'll see them
take pretty extreme stances around bunkers and hazards, so
it must be vastly preferable to hitting with an upside down club.
Also must not be worth carrying a lefty wedge either.

But there was someone who used to claim when they were
having trouble figuring stuff out, they'd switch sides until they
did. Hogan?

Bob Charles was right handed but his family only had left handed clubs -
that was how he started and that is the way he played.

Righty Phil Mickelson started off playing left handed - emulating his
father's swing while they faced each other.

Wayne Gretzky didn't know that clubs were available left handed when
he bought his first set of clubs.

I've always wondered if there is a good way to determine which clubs
would be better for one's game - when starting off. The advantage of
right handed clubs is that they're easier to find (rental and
hand-me-downs). But maybe most of us would be better if we started
off with opposite clubs.

Hockey players, barring any other influence, are taught to shoot so that
their strongest arm is on the top of the stick. As a result, right
handers shoot left and prefer golfing left.

Americans are the other way around - baseball is done with the right
hand behind the handle of the bat for better bat control. As a result,
right handers prefer golfing right.

I wonder if it helps us more for things like eye-dominance, if started
at an early enough age.

I knew a gentleman like that. If his right-sided game was off, he'd
play another round with a set of lefty clubs he had in his car.

The course where he is a member is heavily wooded; he'd normally carry
one club (a 7 iron, IIRC) of the opposide side...if he was playing
rightie that day, the 7 iron would be a lefty.

Several years ago at one of those goofy "skills challenge" events the
competitors were hitting irons (around 8 irons as I recall) at a green and
being scored on distance to the pin. They got 3 tries each. VJ Singh was
hitting last and hit his first shot close enough to win so he decided to
have some fun and borrowed a lefty club from one of the other competitors.
He made a smooth swing at it and stuck it even closer as I recall. Made me
wonder if he could play scratch left handed.

I saw this, Warren, and was going to post the same thing you did. He
made it look so easy, and yes, the second shot, left handed, was even
closer.

I used to play either way for the fun of it and, always carried a LH
club in my bag... just in case!

I know a guy who's a natural lefty but grew up playing to the right.

He switched around a couple years ago and plays equally well each way.

He's also dead to me - both right and left handed.

BTW, he's dead to me because he already had a hole-in-one shooting each
way. Not because he plays both left and right handed.

i think I could shoto about 150 left handed. I can putt almost as good
though.
