My wristwatch has been acting strangly lately. I noticed after hitting
balls the other day that when I tapped it, the hands moved all over the
place. I'm wondering if the shock from hitting thousands of balls over
the years has finally taken its toll. It's a 20 year old Seiko
automatic (self winding). Has anyone else had something similar happen?

Some folks!

I have a Seiko dive watch I found off a reef in 80 feet of water in the
Bahamas in 1982. It was running then and is still running now.

Could be you shocked it. Suggestion: Don't wear a watch while playing.
It's just a distraction. If you really care what time it is on the rane or
on the course get one of those cheapo timepieces that attach to your bag or
your belt. (Heck, I have practically given up wearing a watch. My phone
knows what time it is too and automatically resets to the local time zone as
well.)

Me too. I haven't worn a watch in years, but I haven't had one break
on me since I was a kid who forgot to take it off when I went
swimming. The last time I wore a watch, my wife took it as I went
into surgery, and it fell in a hole in her purse lining. We thought
it was lost until she bought a new purse and found it. By then I was
comfortable without a strap on my hand. (I also don't wear a
visible ring - everybody knows I'm ried though).

Sorry to hear that.

Hibbard hit thousands of balls and he's got a couple of screws loose.

Get an Elgin. Stopped manufacturing in the '60's
but spares readily available. Mine keeps time to
the second and I golf in it most days. £40 on Ebay.

I bought a Seiko in the early seventies in the Far East for eight
dollars. Best watch I've ever owned.

Yeah but is your timing as good?

I think Faldo is the first pro I noticed wearing a watch. I never
did as a kid but I wear one now. The only thing I notice is that
it leaves a pale band around my skin. I also try to get a waterproof
one in case I drop a nine iron into a lake.

How come it lasted that long? I have had two $500+ Seiko watches in the
last 20 years...neither lasted that long; Seiko do not carry spares or
refuse to repair because they are no longer catalogue items.

'Citizen' are the gun mid-priced quality watches these days.....ask any
jeweller/watchmaker.

cheers

Just curious -- why spend that much on something to keep time? I had an
expensive watch once (An Omega), but it cost more to maintain than it did to
buy a new Timex and certainly kept no better time. For years when I've
bothered to wear a watch I've had a Timex digital. Costs about $30 to
replace them every 5 years or so. If you want to wear something expensive,
get a ring, they are a lot harder to break :-)

I think my 1961 self-winding Seiko is in Michigan, with the rest of
Toronto's garbage. Bought it in Kobe but in 2001 Seiko said they
wouldn't service it any more. Never played golf with it on, though.

I usualy use a golf club. I found I couldn't work the ball as well
with my watch.

You are playing golf. You should be wearing a Rolex, Tag Heuer, or a
Breitling just like the pros do. Don't bother with those cheap Seiko's.

But on which arm? Balance is important.

Maybe because it's 20 years old. And a Seiko. Are you friends with Fivey?
