Subject: Better Distance or Accuracy From Any New Driver in 2005/6?
I am reaching the conclusion that the effects of buying a new driver
have really run their course over the past 2 years. At least I haven't
seen or heard too many golfers who are claiming the newer models from
Taylor Made, Nike, Callaway or Titleist are noticeably longer or
straighter than the previous version.

Do any of you disagree, and if so, what new driver you purchased that
is noticeably better than the previous model? And are you sure its not
the balls?

Note: I have been using the Nike Ignite and the Titleist 983K (tried
the Saquatch and the 905, but the heads felt like
cantaloupes-on-a-stick) for the past few months, and am thinking of
going back to my Titleist 975J for greater distance....

I got a TM bubbleshaft 10.5*, a $24.95 walt POS, a Yonex ADX something,
some type of Northwestern piece of junk, one that's written RANGE underneath
and it's made of wood stuff.

So anyway, I don't have a point.

So you want the latest. Well, buy it and then have the guy program the
launch monitor to prove that you bought the right stuff. Wait, maybe it's
the other way around.

I have more than 30 drivers and have been very impressed with the Ping G5.
I never liked pings before but find it long and forgiving.
After I bought it and liked it. It also came out on top in Golf Digests
survey.

I recently purchased 2 persimmon headed drivers from Louisville Golf (190cc
Classic 50s & a 285cc Thumper f.s., both with 43.25" DG S300 steel shafts).
The Classic 50s and Thumper were 10-15 yards and 5 yards shorter,
respectively, than my KZG 460cc Gemini (Stiff Fujikura shaft). The latter
carries the ball ~ 240-250 yards. Unfortunately, I forgot to take my
favorite driver, a Titleist 983K driver), for the comparison. However, based
on ball ks made on wet fairways, the Titleist is not much longer than the
KZG.

I'll tell you, the sound of the Thumper, and the very little loss of
distance off the tee has me wondering whether it might be the driver of
choice if I swap out the short steel shaft for a slightly longer graphite
one ... .

I play my Louisville Golf St II persimmon driver every day. While it
is a bit shorter than most of the metalwood drivers I have used, it is
straighter for me.

I don't know if it is the weight distribution, the head or the shaft
that makes the difference, I just know that I'm more often than not,
straight down the fairway with it. That was never the case with the
metal drivers for me.

And the fact that hitting it off the deck on the fairway is a no-sweat
shot, just makes it better overall.

Wait until you try the Rapture... 10-12 yards longer than my G5!

My year 2000'ish KZG CH-1 driver was somewhat better (somewhat longer,
somewhat more forgiving) than the 1998'ish Cleveland Quadpro driver that it
replaced. The "Hippo Giant" 400cc driver that then hit the bag around 2003
was a BIG step forward (slightly longer, WAY more forgiving) than the CH-1.
My TM R580XD is slightly better than the Hippo Giant. I've now got a new
Wishon 949MC that I built that is slightly better than the TM R580XD, except
that I tend to hit push/fades with this thing for some reason. So the TM is
still the driver in my bag.

The big event in driver design, in my experience, is the 400+cc head
designs. From what I've read the biggest difference in newer composite heads
vs. those built a couple years ago is that they are able to maintain a COR
close to the 0.83 limit over a somewhat larger area of the clubhead.

I've never dabbled with the adjustable weight designs.

IMO.... it's the shaft.

The Harrison Striper shaft with my KZG head seems to be about 30 yards
longer than my older Orli driver. We took one inch off the Harrison
shaft to make it a stiff. The Harrison is supposed to be used in long ball
competitions.

One guy I've played with a few times was at least 20-30 yards shorter than
me. He recently got fitted at a Golf Galaxy, and got an R7 with the shaft
that best matched his swing, and he's now as long as me with about every
shot he hit. Not sure what shaft he got with it, but it's working for him.

If you think your 975J had longer distance, see what shaft was in it.

Go see a competent club fitter in your area and have a driver custom
made for you. It was the best money I have spent.
