Just wondering, the talk of challenges got me wondering who the best players are out there? Any scratch or better players posting regularly on here? Which players are legitimate single-digit players?

Now I have this vague recollection that many years ago we had a pro posting here - who was on the 2nd tier tour had may have eventually made it onto the PGA tour. I thought it may have been O'Hair but a google search shows no RSG posting by that name. Does that ring a bell with any of you old timers, or am I imagining it?

In New Zealand, the NZGA run a website and centrally process all handicap cards as entered by the clubs' handicappers. You can search any player, verify their handicap and the cards they have entered. The idea is to prevent 'sandbaggers' who don't submit their high rounds. It's all at golf co.nz under the 'Search' tab. Is this done in the US and other countries? Cheers, JohnO

The majority of clubs here use GHIN (http://www.ghin.com) and you can search through the scores if you know the person's last name and the state they live in. Australia has a national system at www.golflink.com.au. However due to "privacy considerations" the system does not allow searching on names, only numbers. So if you don't know a person's GolfLink number, there is no way to find them. No name is ever displayed, whereas the NZ system even allows a full searchable listing of each club's members. (I thought you guys got into trouble a while back when someone's employer looked them up and worked out they were playing golf when they were supposed to be sick in bed?) If you click on a competition in your Australian GolfLink record, you can see all the scores for that competition and your placing within it, but only if you have registered with a password. Currently about half the clubs in Australia are on the GolfLink system, the rest still do manual handicapping. -- Cheers Colin Wilson ------------------------------------------------------------------ Trentham Golf Club: http://www.trenthamgolf.com Barnbougle Dunes: http://publishing.kyneton.net.au/barnbougle ------------------------------------------------------------------

Just wondering, the talk of challenges got me wondering who the best players are out there? Any scratch or better players posting regularly on here? Which players are legitimate single-digit players? My last card was single (9.8) but that is nowhere good enough to play with Sparky, Anni, R&B (when playing more than 2 times a year). Last time I played with Bill-O, he was moving down in a rapid descent. Playing with Sparky is like playing with 155mm cannons. It is scary. Playing with Anni is like playing with snakes thinking they have been milked and finding out one slipped through the process. On a tight hazard lined course, I would favor Annika1980 60% of the time. On a wide open course, Sparky maybe 70% of the time.

I'm a legit single handicap, though, there are many, many rounds where I do not feel like it. I suspect that when you say "legit" you mean that the vast majority of their scores are in the 70's. I'm one of those single h-cappers who is frankly pretty stoked anytime I'm in the 70's after the round. Rude Dog is another RSG'r who definately has single-digit game. Here's the difference: I played Tex the day after RSG SoCal in match play, and, I definately had my game going that day. Prolly shot 80 on an unfamiliar (to us both) and very difficult course (72.7 / 132, IIRC), and, he beat me 4 & 3. I played great. He simply played better. -dug

I've watched a lot of pros, but I've never had that happen. Last time I checked she still had one of the pics I took up on her website. Hey, it's the least she could do. I mean, after all the hours I've spent holding up her calendar with one hand. Here's one of my favorite shots that she was kind enough to pose for. http://www.pbase.com/bret/image/28417165 And that was after she had just teed off. Try getting Tiger to pose for ya while playing and see how that works out. My point is that while I do have some personal opinions of how Natalie career has been handled (or mis-handled), she has never been anything but super-classy to me. I hope she finally gets a win this year.

I forget his first name, but if Jakobowski isn't a single digit handicapper, I'm a bad adder. He shot 71 at Anthem in Vegas, the second time he played it. Is it David ... oh well. Even Bruce will admit that his current game is not like it was then. Similarly, my game has gone downhill fast. Two years ago, I'd have beaten Bruce. He disagrees, but trust me ... I'd have waxed his ass. Nowadays, I might not be able to beat anybody. Or at least anybody named "Sparky." I have enjoyed watching Sparky improve in the short time he's been playing. He inspires me to want to practice and get good again just to hang with him. And brother Bill-o has gotten better as well. When I play with them these days I feel that I'm the weakest link. At least until the bets are made. :)

From the scores that I have read you posting during the RSG events, and the length and difficulty of the courses that they are normally played on, Bruce would probably have taken you. The round that I got to play with Bruce was 8 years ago on a difficult track and around the 7000 yard k. Neither one of us played our best golf, yet I could see that Bruce had a lot of game. I was very pleasantly surprised, as he was of my game. It was a great day of golf, which is something that I have rarely experienced with people whom I do not know. David

You could probably find a way to shoot 70 in almost any event. Sparky is definately an inspiration, and he has some good advice on how to play the game as well. A lesson with him would be money well spent. I've never been able to handle billo, maybe I should try borther bill!

I would agree that Annika and Bruce are >2, 1! There's a REAL matchup for ya!. I have had the extreme pleasure of playing with Bruce Newman and the man can play. His iron play is some of the best that I have ever witnessed live--except for a couple of euro-tour pros that I played with some years back. FWIW, I do have a legit single digit. The lowest I was at was 4.1HI. I have not been able to play the last 2 1/2 years-except for a trip to Florida last year, where I played 4 rounds of golf. The last round I played, I shot 4 over par. The round that I played with Bruce was a long time ago, and if I had not hit three balls OB and paid attention to the scorecard--the distances are to the front of the green, I am such a moron--I would not have been in so many bunkers in front of the green. The course is in Frankfurt, Germany. It used to host the German Open and is a nice track to test your abilities on. Bruce was a bit off on that day and shot 78, or 79. I would have had the same score, but for the three OB's. It was also the first round that I got to play after having been "forced" to take a layoff of about 2 years, so I was not very disappointed. One day, I will make to to an RSG event, just don't know when :-) >Lotsa pretense here though! David

In Germany, only tournament rounds count toward your HI once you are under an 18HI. When I started out here, they put me in at a 10, since I had played virutally no golf--except for the round with Bruce--in around three years. I got it down to a 6.1 when the season had come to and end. I was palying to about a 2 for the months of Aug and Sep, when I won 7 out of 11 tournaments that I entered. The last tournament round of that year, I shot +2, which was the lowest round recorded that year by an amateur. David

If you come this way any time we can try to organize a special event maybe in Atlanta or Dallas or New Orleans. Bruce and Bret with one t would be a good match then. Brett, whoops, Bret, is a very good ball striker and a very st player. I don't know if he is really great at any one aspect of the game, but solid at just about everything.

Brett, whoops, Bret, is >a very good ball striker and a very st player. I don't know if he is >really great at any one aspect of the game, but solid at just about >everything. I have a huge itch to play an RSG event. I will be in Florida for three weeks, from the 15th of August to the 5th of September. Unfortunately, I will not be able to travel too far :-( My parents are celebrating their 50th anniversary this year and my dad will be turning 80 this June (He still plays at least three days a week). I will be flying in with at least one of my daughters and a family reunion is planned that will take up at least 1 week of the three that I will be there. FWIW, my last official HI was a 7.1. I was fighting my swing for two years after developing a case of the sh***ks and losing all confidence. It was still fun whipping on the people at the club who began talking about my game behind my back. Even with the disaster that my swing had become, I finished fourth in the club championship--should have finished third but hit a wrong ball in the second round that cost me two strokes and I finished one stroke behind the third place finisher. I basically bunted the ball down the fairway for three rounds and let my short game take care of the rest. To win, I would have had to have everything working well. At any rate, one of these day, I will play an RSG event with a skeletion of the game that I had up to five years ago. I am sure it would be fun to match the faces to the names :-) David

I've been to 15+ of them and only played well in three. I shot a personal best at mine in 2003(?) and won, finished third at NW last year (would have won except for that bastard Adrian Cole), and second at OH in 1997(?) where I five putted and lost by 1. But putting the face on the name of Stemmer, or Golfin' Don, or Rick Dement, or that freak Annika, or Rock Pile -- that makes it worthwhile. -- jvdp RSG Cincinnati July 13-15, 2007 http://www.rsgcincinnati.com
