I used to have the yips so bad I once 4 putted from 6" on crowned greens. I

I learned not to be nonchalant about short putts after I tapped a
short putt that missed the hole - and got my foot. Now I take them
seriously.

Well, I made the 3" come-backer :-)

dave

ps. I'm curious as to how you resolved (to whatever degree it is resolved)
your yips.

I went through 2 putters a year lookin for the answer. The answer, of
course, was in my head. I was convinced I couldn't putt and it digressed
from there. I had one round with my brother in Florida where I 5 putted 6
times in 18 holes. Never less than 3 putts a green. That was rock-bottom.
The next week I was golfing with a lady friend of mine (who had won the
state seniors amateur tournament). I was having a tough round and had just
4 putted from 3 feet for about the third time that day. Deb walked over and
said "you putt like a wimp, never even bother with 3 footers, walk up to
them, point them at the hole and hit it hard enough to go 3 feet past, if
you go farther past, don't worry about it."

That was the turning point (in almost 3 years of the yips). I started
pointing the putter straight at the hole and knockin it home hard. I
figured what the heck, I wasn't scoring anyway. Amazingly I started to 2
putt more than 3 putt. I still had a few 4 putts in a round but found I was
making up for them with 1 putts. My scores got better. A month later I
was shooting high 80s to mid 90s golf. I've never looked back. Since then
I occasionally lapse, but I know deep down in side, they're coming back. If
they do, I'll just start knocking the cover off it on the greens again.

Well, it's been many years since then and I still three putt a few times a
round, but the yips are in recession. After a safe time I started to look
at my putting stroke and discovered what the whole thing had taught me was
to ACCELERATE through the ball. When I had the yips I would grossly
DECELERATE. My muscles would try to over-compensate, spasm in my hand, and
knock it 15 feet past. That made me think I was hitting it too hard with
caused me to try to further DECELERATE, and you get the picture.

HTH,
Art

Another simple thing to try is putt with big muscles.

Hands and arms quiet/dead----just use the back and shoulders. Head still.

Focus on a sweet spot strike.
