Ernie Els: considered to have one of the very best swings in golf. <http://content-golf.live.advance.net/images/gd200501/elsswing.jpg > Sergio Garcia: considered a great ball striker. What's so hard about this? You hit down on the irons, hit up on the woods. Even more so now with those big frigging heads. The USGA didn't put a rule in limiting the height of tees because people were trying to hit down on the driver. If you have a video of Tiger hitting down on a driver the ball probably ended up on a roof somewhere. Also his swingspeed is about the equivalent of a NASCAR racecar, probably double at what we are swinging at. Ben Hogan in TMFOG states his preferred position is 1.5 inches inside his left heel, and this is constant from wedge to driver. Which really looks about 1 inch further forward than Els (who has a "one plane" Hogan-style swing only without as aggressive a hip turn to initiate the downswing). Hogan also says it doesn't really matter exactly where the ball is played, as long as it is consistent (he mighta said someplace between middle of stance and off left heel but I'd have to check again). -PA

"On all standard shots the ball should be spotted in the same position relative to the left heel. (I spot it a half inch to an inch inside the left heel toward the right foot.) You can, to be sure, play the ball a shade farther forward or back - it varies from individual to individual, depending on the spot that is the lowest point in his swing" Hi Lllllarry - Hogan sends his regards. Hogan is only important insomuch as Larry likes to compare his journery as a hacker to Hogan's and therefore justify telling us about each of his guesses about what makes a good swing (as opposed to Hogan, who only described what he thought was a good swing after he'd become acknowledged as one of the game's best). Daring to mention that Hogan disagrees with him on ball position will assure you of being called a "wino", or some such. :-)
