A strange question Suppose I am 95 yards away from a tree. I cannot tell the tree height, it may be 50 yards, or it might be 40. Can I clear over the tree? I hit my 6 iron roughly 176 yards, and have a pretty high ball flight in general. If I hit my 6 iron, will it clear the tree? How high will my 6 iron shot be at 95 yards from impact? -PA

Go around, go under, etc. Let's suppose someone was going to bet you $10,000 that you could not hit a golf ball on top of the Wachovia Center in Philadelphia. Purely out of curiousity (because you would never do something so illegal), you are interested in whether it is possible. You pace it off....95 yards to the near side of the roof. You are unsure about the height, looks like roughly 40 yards tall, but could be as high as 50 yards. You can hit a 6 iron 176 yards on flat ground with no wind. Can you put a 6 iron on the roof (assuming it was legal and you had a sleeve of Pro V1Xs at your disposal, and could tee it up). Also, you've been offered to hit any club you like, which one gives you the best chance... -PA

Of course, if you wanted you could pay for an hour of launch monitor time and see exactly what the monitor predicts for the shot shape. Dave

That would be 120 to 150 feet. A tall oak tree is 90 feet. Tall Georgia Pines. 100 ft trees are not unusual. Add in a 30-40 foot rise, you get the 40-50 yard height I'm interested in. -PA

Don't ever try to go over a tree that's 50 yards tall, or 150 feet tall. That's a tree about this big: http://www.photoseek.com/04AUS-10723-DiamondTree.jpg You go around something like that. Ed

I've always just put the iron head on the ground (face up), point the shaft at the tree/obstacle, step on the face of the iron so the shaft comes off the ground, the shaft line is the approximate trajectory. It's approximate for lots of reasons, where are your hands in your real swing, did you open/close the face, the back of your club head isn't parallel to the face, etc. So, if the shaft points over the tree go for it, if not, go to plan two ... different club, different direction ...
