Now ...I dont recognize more than half of the players !! Very few of
the Big Names are even in the tourney ..How times

Same reason they don't go a lot of other places -- too much money available
without playing there. Time was when all the pros played every week because
that's how you made a living at it. Now the top players get more money off
endorsements than playing so they only have to play often enough to maintain
their endorsement value. (Speaking of which does anyone else find it
hillarious to see Phil Michelson talking about some driver (a big bertha I
think) that can change your game -- I suppose hitting it into a trash bag is
a change :-)

to win" (it was in your header).
Now, I'm just wondering. When was it that the Bob Hope tournament was
"THEEE tournament to win?"

When, pray tell, was the Bob Hope Desert Classic ever "THEE tourney to win."
Maybe for amateurs it was (although I would argue that the Pebble Beach
National Pro-Am has always been a more prestigious tournament for amateurs
to win). But certainly for the pros, the Hope has never been "THEE tourney
to win." That's just lunacy.

Can anyone "explain" George Lopez to me? I've never seen the show, in
fact until 1 month ago I had never heard of him at all. Now since they
started promoting the Hope I've seen him 5 or 6 times in very short
doses. In each instance I have had the same impression: "Who is this
guy and how did he get on TV?"

What I can't figure out is that whenever the Golf Channel refers to the
tournament they always add the tag line "Hosted by George Lopez". Did he
(or someone sponsoring him) buy that? Is this an attempt to somehow
substitute his name for Hope's on the tournament? I can see that the time
will come when those who watched Bob Hope are no longer watching golf and
his name will be no more draw than, say, W.C. Fields. Maybe Lopez is well
known in some circles and they feel he is a suitable replacement? I've
never seen him in anything other than celebrity golf, but I don't watch
sitcoms and don't go to comedy clubs so he could be famous and I'd never
have seen him.

The "celebrities" aren't what they were. Somehow Lopez and Romano don't
have the punch of Hope and Crosby. Go figure! IMHO, the celebrities
greatly detract for watching the event. Somehow, I just don't get anything
out of watching Kenny G play golf. He may shoot better scores than Jack
Lemon, but his is nowhere near the golfer Lemon was. Although I've
probably been too traumatized by riding in too many elevators to evaluate
anything Kenny G does in an unbiased manner.

Who does? The star system is very different than it once was.

Really. Pitt, Depp, Cage, Ford...a little more substantive as stars than
Romano and Lopez. Lopez and Romano would be like getting Bob Crane and Telly
Savalas back in the day..no wait, Crane and Savalas would have more punch
than Romano and Lopez. I would have to think of stars from some lame TV
shows that lasted a couple of years and then died.

Sure, but these days we don't follow everything even big name stars do
for recreation.
I basically stopped watching regular TV shows several decades ago. I
don't know why I'm not interested anymore - certainly the quality of
the top 10% (not Sturgeon's crud) is better than what I watched in my
youth.
This is a TV era. More people watch TV than movies. This dilutes
the star system. Who would be more likely to watch a golf
tournament - on TV - if Harrison Ford was the celebrity instead of a
TV star?

Don't think that will happen. Can't ever remember Lanny saying anything
that wasn't MyGoshInYourFaceFreakinObvious!!
However, that isn't my beef. My question is who is George Lopez? I know
now that he has or had a TV show, but until I started seeing promos for
the Hope I had never heard of him. Even now, when I do catch him on TV
for a second or 2 my thought is always the same; how did this guy get on
television?
