Subject: Another rules question...

Sunday we had a tournement. On the very first green I was about the same distance out as another guy. Actually I thought I was out so I prepared to putt. Not known to me, the other guy thought he was out and got ready to putt. His back was to me so he didnt see me standing over my ball and the bill of my hat prevented me from seeing him standing over his ball. You guessed it. We both putted at the same time.....there wasnt 1/10th of a second between the sounds of the two putts. Oh crap! I realized right away there was a problem and my heart sunk as I saw our two balls heading for the hole on converging paths. The balls didnt miss each other by more than six inches and both stopped about 1 foot from the hole. I immediately looked at the other two guys who were standing there with their thumbs up their butts......"Why didnt somebody say something!?" They just werent paying close attention. Well, the balls didnt touch but I immediately asked what the ruling would be if they had hit each other. Silence. Well? In 30 years of golf I have never been involved in a simultaneous putt situation. Never even thought of it or heard of it.

Never even thought of it or heard of it. > Under these circumstances, in stroke play, the golf balls are 'outside agencies' to each other. See exception to Rule 19-5 which refers one to Rule 19-1b. Note: from 'Definitions'..."....An 'outside agency' is ANY (caps mine) agency......in strokeplay...not part of the competitor's side...." Rule 19-1b.....Both balls must be replaced, and the stroke(s) replayed. This is an old chestnut, often discussed in 'Rules' circles! cheers david
