Subject: A golf post - strangest round in a long while
|
I've long thought the strangest round I ever had was one about 8 years ago when I actually made 6 birdies....and still shot 84. Obviously, it was one of those "all or nothing" days. Iron shots were hunting flagsticks. Putts were dropping. And when that wasn't happening, all hell was breaking loose. 6-under on 6 holes. 19 over on the other 12. On balance, a fairly average day. But of course, it was anything BUT average. That was 8 years ago. Then there was yesterday, which was similar in many ways. Not as many birdies. Just one, actually. The first hole. Driver, Gap Wedge to 20 feet. Drano. It would be the first of several putts and chips of that distance or further to drop. But like in that other "strange" round, when good things weren't happening, all hell was breaking loose. I can't say it was an abolutely horrible ball-striking round, since I didn hit several great shots, including a 5-iron off a hanging lie to within 15 feet of a tucked pin to set up a par save. Or a 3-wood over water off a hanging lie to about 25 feet of the cup to set up a birdie try. But what made this round so weird was the fact that I was rolling putts in from all over the place. Putts of 20, 25, even 30 feet were going in....on at least 5 different holes. All for pars, except that 20-footer on the 1st for birdie. And get this.....I chipped in THREE TIMES. Once for double-bogey, and twice to save par. Still shot 84, so on balance, it was a fairly average day. But like that other round 8 years ago, it was anything BUT average. Truly another all-or-nothing day. Very strange. Fun. But strange. Just once I'd like to have a day when my short game is that good while my full shots are as good. Just once. Randy

Weird how some of that happens. Must just be the law of averages. Played a tourney on Saturday. Organized every Fall and Spring by a friend of a friend, playing just for skins and closest to the pins. Between my buddy and I, we had 7 birdies, 5 of them were long bombs... All on shitty aerated greens.

It did happen to me once, for about a week, over 5 rounds I averaged 80.40 hit 39% GIR, 61% Fairways, got up & down 40% of the time and made 2 of every 3 sand saves, carded 8 birdies, 4 of them over a 5 hole stretch and made only 1 triple, chipped in twice and was making all kinds of putts: snakes, down hill, long and short. When I did make a bad swing the ball ended up playable (except once on #14 @ Field's Ferry thus the triple). It was quite intoxicating, unfortunately, the hangover was a doozy as I didn't break 90 again for almost a month and didn't break 80 (did it twice that week) again for 13 months. -- bill-o A "gimme" can best be defined as an agreement between two golfers neither of whom can putt very well.
