So who's going to get the 2006 Varden? Furyk?

With an asterisk?

You must be thinking about Phil.

I'm thinking of Tiger at this year's Nissan.

Two straight years that he played only two rounds at Riviera, despite
missing the cut neither time. An oddity.

Your web searches will turn up more hits if you learn to spell it
correctly.

The man's name was "Vardon." He was a pretty decent golfer, or so I've
heard.
Even had a grip named after him. Kinda like Mr. Baseball and Mr.
Overlap.

The Byron Nelson Award, for the the lowest adjusted scoring average for
all PGA Tour events.

The Vardon Trophy is awarded annually by the PGA of America to the
touring professional with the lowest Adjusted Scoring Average. It is
based on a minimum of 60 rounds, with no incomplete rounds, in events
co-sponsored or designated by the PGA Tour. The Adjusted Score is
computed from the average score of the field at each event.

OK Howard, what makes TW ineligible?

If you're thinking the WD at Riviera, the consensus was that withdrawing
*before* a round doesn't seem to be grounds to bring the "no incomplete
rounds" into play. (Of course, the consensus might be wrong!)

Or is there some other incident I've forgotten?

It is my understanding that he is not expected to complete the minimum
number of qualifying rounds. Anybody have a link to the Varden
Trophy requirements?

On the other hand, an Order of Merit is within reach.

Clearly. Like Larry, he knows that if he makes a demonstrably ridiculous
claim lots of people will want to correct him. Especially after all the
recent bickering.

On the other hand, maybe he's just bat-shit crazy. It's sometimes hard to
tell where the troll ends and the loon begins.

He is given credit for the three rounds he played at the WGC Match
Play, so he has 51 rounds. He still needs to play the Disney.

Yes, and it requires only 50 rounds, so he is on track to win that.

I don't think Tiger needs to play the Disney to qualify for the Vardon
Trophy.

Tiger should now have 55 rounds after the WCG win in England. He will play
the Tour Championship which has no cut (Only the top 30 players qualify), so
that brings him to 59. I am fairly sure he will play the Target World
Challenge on Dec 14-17 since Tiger has a endorsement contract with Target
and they support his foundation. That would bring him to 61 even if he
misses the cut at the Target.

That is not to say that Tiger will skip the Disney. It is very close to his
home so he can sleep in his own bed. It is also 2 weeks before the Tour
Championship, so he may need the tuneup.

Tiger is the host of the Target, and will definitely play unless sick
or injured. However, it is not an official PGA event, so it won't
count for the Vardon. It also has a field of about 16, so there is no
cut.

Also note that it is not guaranteed he will play four rounds at the
Tour Championship. He could withdraw at any time.
