Subject: +1 or +2 iron length for a 6'3" guy
|
Hi everyone. I've been playing with a +1 set for about 4-5 years now and was wondering what the proper iron length for me is. I've heard that you shouldn't lengthen +1's to +2 because that would change the way the club lies and all sorts of other things that I don't understand. If that statement is correct, do companies sell "native" +2 iron sets?

Clubmakers usually start with your 'wrist to floor' measurement when standing upright and then modify the 'standards' revealed by that measurement according to your best posture and the mechanics of your swing. As a general rule taller players more easily accomodate 'standard' off the shelf clubs than do their height challenged fellow golfers. However, as the proper length and lie is perhaps the most important 'fitting' parameter when selecting clubs it is wise to have a competent clubfitter size you up to begin with! cheers david

It all depends on how you tend to swing, how long your arms are, how long your torso is, how low you hold your c.g. as you swing, the tide, etc. My brother stands 6'-4" and he swings a 1.5" club with a slightly flat lie. I'm 6'1" and I swing a 'standard' length club with a 2° upright lie. You ought to find a pro shop that has a fitting cart with a bunch of different club sizes to try out. It does all boil down to what you hit best. Dave

If you think about it, you already play short clubs--they're your 8-iron, 9-iron, and so on. How can you play clubs with such a disparity in length from longest to shortest? The lie angle, of course, and the fact that the heads increase in weight as the clubs become shorter, to make up for the lack of length. What the "proper" length is for you depends on how you set up--and just because someone is taller doesn't mean their clubs have to be all that much longer, because taller people have longer arms. If the clubs you're playing with work well for you, and there are no particular ballflight issues, then it sounds to me like they're the right length for you, given the lie angles they have. Occasionally people will use different length clubs for reasons of comfort; if being able to stand more upright, for instance, was more comfortable for you, and reduced pain or stress or some such, then length would be an issue there.
